PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- A car bomb struck a busy market in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing 100 people - mostly women and children - as visiting Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pledged U.S. support for Islamabad's campaign against Islamic militants.

More than 200 people were wounded in the blast in the main northwestern city of Peshawar, the deadliest in a surge of attacks by suspected insurgents this month. The government blamed militants seeking to avenge an army offensive launched this month against al-Qaida and Taliban in their stronghold close to the Afghan border.

The bombing was the deadliest since explosions hit homecoming festivities for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in Karachi in October 2007, killing about 150 people. Bhutto was later slain in a separate attack.

Wednesday's bomb destroyed much of the Mina Bazaar in Peshawar's old town, a warren of narrow alleys clogged with stalls and shops selling dresses, toys and cheap jewelry that drew many female shoppers and children in the conservative city.

The blast collapsed buildings, including a mosque, and set scores of shops ablaze. The wounded sat amid burning debris and parts of bodies as a huge plume of gray smoke rose above the city.

Crying for help, men tried to pull survivors from beneath wreckage. One man carried away a baby with a bloody face and a group of men rescued a young boy covered in dust, but others found only bodies of the dead. A two-story building collapsed as firefighters doused it with water, triggering more panic.

"There was a deafening sound and I was like a blind man for a few minutes," said Mohammad Usman, who was wounded in the shoulder. "I heard women and children crying and started to help others. There was the smell of human flesh in the air."

Clinton, on her first visit to Pakistan as secretary of state, was a three-hour drive away in the capital, Islamabad, when the blast took place. Speaking to reporters, she praised the army's anti-Taliban offensive in South Waziristan and offered U.S. support.

"I want you to know this fight is not Pakistan's alone," Clinton said. "These extremists are committed to destroying what is dear to us as much as they are committed to destroying that which is dear to you and to all people. So this is our struggle as well."

Standing beside her, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the violence would not break his government's will to fight back.

"The resolve and determination will not be shaken," Qureshi said. "People are carrying out such heinous crimes - they want to shake our resolve. I want to address them: We will not buckle. We will fight you. We will fight you because we want peace and stability in Pakistan."

Peshawar, the economic hub of the northwest and the seat of the provincial government, has long been a favorite target of militants who control large parts of territory to the west in tribal regions near the Afghanistan border. Extremism has flourished there since it was used as a staging ground in the 1980s for U.S.-funded fighters preparing to battle the Soviet-installed regime in Afghanistan.

No group claimed responsibility for the bombing, but that is not unusual, especially when the victims are Pakistani civilians. North West Frontier Province Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said 100 people were killed. A doctor said 60 of the dead were either women or children.

Three bombs have exploded in Peshawar this month, including one that killed more than 50 people. They are part of at least 10 major attacks in Pakistan that have killed 250 people either claimed by or blamed on Taliban militants.

Most have targeted security forces, but some bombs have gone off in public places, apparently to undercut support for the army's assault on the border and expose the weakness of the government.

The Taliban have warned Pakistan that they would stage more attacks if the army does not end its ground offensive in the South Waziristan tribal region, where the military has sent 30,000 troops to flush out insurgents. South Waziristan is a major base for the Pakistani Taliban and other foreign militants.

Hussain blamed the militants for Wednesday's attack.

"We are hitting them at their center of terrorism, and they are hitting back targeting Peshawar," he said. "This is a tough time for us. We are picking up the bodies of our women and children, but we will follow these terrorists and eliminate them."

Earlier in the thread I asked the question of how these militants expect to gain power by killing innocent women and children.

The question was answered, at least in part in a post by Scott Corey in today's Informed Comment.

http://www.juancole.com/

It is a compelling argument and answers many of the questions I had on the use of terrorism.

I think the use of such tactics is bound to fail. Especially in as diverse a country as Pakistan. And I think the use of such tactics is why al Qaida and their clones have failed to obtain power anywhere except in regions torn by war.

Al Qiada, and now the Taliban's worst enemy is al Qaida and the Taliban.

Well Pakistan are you still in denial of the Taliban existence in your backyard? This is a hard lesson learned. If you had not been so corky from the beginning this would not happen. We are glad Obama is not sending more troops. This is Pakistan's problem. They have blown it to what it is today. Get more vigilant Pakistan and stop blaming your neighbours for your problems. This is your baby created by you. You clean up your act.

Biden, salute to what you said.

While I agree what is happening in Pakistan is terrible and senseless violence. Why is it OUR problem? Al Qaeda exists in several countries in the Middle East. Is the USA going to begin global occupation in the hopes of eradicating Al Qaeda? We will just further bankrupt ourselves. Even the Chinese don't have enough money to lend us to fight all the wars we get ourselves into.

We don't exactly have a great history of success in peace keeping. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, now Pakistan?

Time to get out of the middle east and focus on fixing our own country that is filled with its own problems: corruption, poor schools, lack of health care, etc. etc. Does America have to be invaded for our politicians to pay attention to our problems here at home?

Pakistan's version of the Taliban is Pakistan's problem.

That is why the Pakistani military is waging an offensive against them.

Afghanistan is our problem because, first, the attacks on 9/11/01.

And secondly because the Bush Administration bungled the response.

We are in Afghanistan. That is not at issue.

The issue is how does the President clean up the mess of his predecessor. And I am willing to give him the time and political support to do so.

You are willing to give it time, because your son or daughter isn't out fighting a war that doesn't make any sense.

We can pull out of Afghanistan in a heart beat if we wanted to. The president isn't cleaning up a mess, he is making the mess bigger. The Taliban were the reason we went in after 9/11. All we are doing now is occupying a country that doesn't want us...

If you are comfortable with the Pakistanis dealing with the Taliban, then you should be comfortable with the Afghanis dealing with the Taliban. Let somebody else protect their poppy fields.

This is NOT our struggle.

We are involved in this struggle because we make it so. We need to get out, stop flaunting our money around, and just come home and mind our own business.

Why MUST the US meddle so? No wonder we are resented. We think we can buy our way in anywhere and be loved. Stupid arrogance of the USA. No wonder we are in decline.

This is a terrible and senseless act.

This sort of thing may have the effect of consolidating the will of the Pakistani people to turn against the extremists. When "al Qaeda in Iraq" turned to attacking civilians, it helped to solidify the will of the people against those killing civilians. It is hard to imagine any rational person welcoming this sort of atrocity.

Some people here who are saying that Pakistanis are Arabs. Sorry, but you are misinformed.

Pakistan uses the Arabic alphabet (origin: present-day Arab world) adapted onto their own language and they mostly follow Islam (origin: Saudi Arabia), but after that there is nothing Arabic about Pakistan. They speak Urdu which has a Sanskrit base and most of the people come from ethnic groups of the Indian Subcontinent.

Americans use the Roman alphabet (origin: present-day Italy) with lots of in-mixing of other languages and the majority are Christians (origin: present-day Israel). We are neither Italian nor Israeli.

A couple points here.

The people of Pakistan speak many different languages. The tribal areas in question speak mostly Pashtu, I believe.

And Islam came from ARABIA. Not Saudi Arabia. Which did not come into being until well into the 20th Century.

Consider why Pakistani headlines question motives of US military before bombing of a hotel?
http://www.thenews.com.pk/top_story_detail.asp?Id=17401

http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/pakistan/Pak-probes-mystery-of-US-Marines-steel-boxes/Article1-339736.aspx
And all of this stemming from the need to get the grand boogieman Osama, who was always on the CIA payroll, aka Tim Osman. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6689741.ece
The CIA says they have been successfull at disrupting Osamas network BUT he had always, since the formation of Al Qaeda, worked for the CIA. Its public knowledge.

The rest is smoke and mirrors, and the current MO is the same time and time again.
Create panic within a country, devide it and bring in the US Forces.
Classic and well used CIA methodology used in many countries.

As to the story, yes it is here as well, http://www.dawn.com/2008/09/21/top1.htm - I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make or whether or not to agree or disagree.

Read a little of Pakistani history. There are indigenous ethnic splits that need no outside fomenting, though of course, such cleavages can always be manipulated.
