LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson may be headed to the top of the charts again – this time at the movie box office.

"Michael Jackson's This Is It" took in $2.2 million domestically from its first late-night screenings, setting it up for a big full opening day Wednesday and a strong shot at a No. 1 debut weekend.

Those evening screenings alone were enough to top the $1.7 million that Paramount's fright flick "Paranormal Activity," last weekend's No. 1 movie, pulled in over the entire day Tuesday.

With Halloween at hand, "Paranormal Activity" expands into its widest release yet, about 2,400 theaters, compared to about 3,500 for "This Is It."

Distributor Sony said Wednesday matinees for "This Is It" already had surpassed the film's haul from those first evening screenings. The studio paid $60 million for worldwide rights to the film, which was distilled from more than 100 hours of footage shot as Jackson rehearsed for what would have been a 50-concert comeback run in London starting last July.

While "This Is It" is not quite a concert film, box-office watchers are gauging its success against "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert," the biggest concert movie on record. "Best of Both Worlds" had a $31.1 million opening weekend last year and pulled in $65.3 million domestically during its entire run.

"This Is It" so far has not approached any major box-office records. The best results ever for advance evening screenings came from "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," which took in $13.2 million Thursday night ahead of its official Friday release in summer 2006. "Independence Day" had the best Tuesday night advance results, with $11.1 million in summer 1996.

Still, "This Is It" already is well on its way to becoming a top-grossing music documentary.

Last March's "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" runs a distant second to "Best of Both Worlds in the concert-film record books, topping out at $19.2 million. "Madonna: Truth or Dare" follows with $15 million, and last year's "U2 3D" is fourth with $10.2 million.

"As a genre, concert movies and even documentaries aren't usually the type of films to bring in big box-office bucks, but because of his name and also the timing of it, I think it's a winner," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "That $60 million investment I think was worthwhile."

Sony, which opened "This Is It" simultaneously in 99 countries, plans to release worldwide box-office results Thursday for the film's first full day.

"This Is It" faces some hurdles over its first weekend, which falls on Halloween, when the main competition will be scary movies such as "Paranormal Activity" and "Saw VI."

Halloween day itself, which falls on Saturday, typically cuts into theater business, with many fans skipping movies in favor of parties.

With Jackson's death just weeks before the concerts were to open, the rehearsal footage now stands as a final curtain call, and fans have been happy to get one last glimpse of the singer at work.

Some came away surprised at how precise and hands-on the soft-spoken Jackson was as he developed the musical numbers with his backup dancers and musicians.

"He was very, very much into every detail of his work," said Marilyn Morrison, who saw "This Is It" in New York City. "I always thought that he was so quiet and shy, but he was very authoritative, very detail-orientated."

2. now that he's gone, and esp with this film, it's easier to see that he always had all the hallmarks of the kind of artist the academic crowd loves: genius and exotic, passionate and puritanical, exhibitionistic and frightfully shy. and yes, it's all there to see in the film.

re bio of movie of mj. i started casting it while watching the film. it's a tough one. only sure shot would be scarlett o'hara as oriantha parangiris, the wonderful female guitarist (unless of course she plays herself). as for who could play mj? hm. that's a tough one. i decided on meryl streep. if tilden swinton can play dylan, she can play mj. no. no need to get into racial or gender issues. it's one person's opinion and i just think unless someone else great comes to mind. she's is it. she will do the best job.

1. I went to see the film again tonight. This time, instead of moms and kids and singletons, there were lots of 20s and 30s something couples. older folks, too. 400 seat theater and the energy was something else.

people were quiet in the beginning as they checked out the film, but then, they started applauding after songs as though it were michael in concert in front of them. doesn't matter that it was rehearsal footage and not full out performances. they were into it.

then, by the time mj did the jackson 5 songs, people were singing along. after that, some people were calling out, michael! michael! the way they used to do at shows.

prediction: this film could enter cult status. it could be one of those films that is shown for years on friday nights at midnight where some people show up in costume or otherwise dance in their seats during certain songs, etc.

i also think something special has happened with this film that will (depending upon your perspective) either restore or elevate mj in the eyes of the wary intellectual/arty crowd who had abandoned him decades ago. he come off as part wizard, part king, full of jittery fun and magic, now composed, now in full control of his game on stage, but obviously bearing marks of having been ravaged by years of insecurity.

What is it about human nature that we immediately want to tear down and rip into someone? Why can't we see the genius of the man -- which this film very clearly demonstrates -- and appreciate and applaud that another human being excelled at and mastered his art form? What genius in history has not been a tortured soul?

I saw the movie because I've been a fan of Michael Jackson since I was a kid. My childhood, adolescence and adulthood has his music as the soundtrack. The documentary, a behind-the-scenes film, shows how meticulous he was, what a perfectionist he was, what a showman he was, and how he knew exactly how to create dramatic effects on stage to wow his fans. In the end, it was all about entertaining his fans. From what I saw, the concerts in London were going to be phenomenal, nothing had ever compared to or ever been seen like whatt he planned to do on stage.

If you don't like Michael Jackson, you won't see it so spare us all the hate-trash talk. It only demeans yourself. Your talk will last a moment. Michael Jackson's music will last forever. Not to mention the effect he's had and will have on the 39 charities he contributed to in his lifetime. Something else that speaks volumes. Those who trash him...what have you done to better humanity or the human condition? Your hateful words do not enlighten or make the world a better place.

Divine intervention was in all of this. This movie is prophetic. In recent years MJ was reclusive and appeared sickly in the public. He had molestation allegations, which soured many fans and famous peers. Yes, we all know he was an addict but this movie will change his course of history.

He was a flawed human, as we all are, but his primary goal was his music. He was a fantastic artist and this last movie showing him doing what he enjoyed is how we will remember him.

Radio hosts like Tom Joyner should not attempt to make the public feel guilty by saying the media and others made MJ feel bad. MJ made his own life choices. We can't make a wealthy entertainer into someone supernatural and unflawed if that's not how they were. I don't know any perfect people.

It’s hard to ignore the fact assisted prescription suicide is not a subject covered by the film or his family. They seem happy to pretend all the way to the bank. The once king of pop is abused even in death. Sad commentary.

You sound like one of MJ's fans who didn't want the movie shown. Well, it's time to get over that. Nothing and no one is ever going to bring back the MJ we knew. Yes, he died prematurely but MJ purchased what he wanted. Unfortunately, it took his life. Keep the memories of him alive.

You clearly are a Michael Jackson hater and that's okay. You also sound young. Stop listening to the tabloids and stick with the facts. Most critics like the movie. That's a fact!

I think Oneisone is Truth101 with a new username. The tone, content, and...er...writing "style" of his postings/rantings seem very similar.

And what is wrong if catholics go to mass? What is wrong if fans of Michael Jackson go to see this movie and want to talk about it? Can you somehow describe how that possibly gives you the right to disparage either MJ or the fans? Where are you coming from with this comment?

I even wonder if you have ever seen even one video of Michael Jackson's work. How about this, oneisone? Check out this live video of Michael Jackson at Radio City Music Hall in 1988.

Watch it through, OK? Because I have a feeling that you can only write what you write because you don't know very much at all about Michael Jackson's work. I was the same way until he died and then I started to study him. Now I have a different view.

He makes it look so easy, as though what he does is because he is just a force of nature, but the truth is that he worked very hard to get everything just so in his shows. That is one of the many reasons why the fans are grateful for this new film and flocking to it. He had never let people behind the scenes, and yes, it is inspiring to get a glimpse of how he and his myriads of co-workers created the magic we, as individuals, a nation, and the world, all enjoyed.

olivesforbreakfast,
I also didn't know his work until after his death. With a dance background, I was meserized by his dance (the passion and fire) when I started looking him up. I wanted to know what drove him, what made him do what he did. I wanted to know how the work was created, so this ended up being one of my fav vidoes (audio rather)...

Enjoy!
Ps. olives for breakfast (if literally) sounds delightful!

This movie was simply brilliant! MJ had not missed one beat. He was just as energetic and talented as ever. He sang with tenderness and it soared. His dancing sharp and on point. He had a huge technical and creative team, but this was his baby. Visionary, professional, loving, and humble. Inspiring and supportive. I am in awe of this fallen talent, The King of Pop.
