This afternoon, the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees voted 16-3 to approve the proposal for the new dorm, which will be named the "Wildcat Coal Lodge." Significantly, two of the "no" votes were from faculty representative Ernie Yanarella and Student Government President Ryan Smith, who said he opposed the motion "as a voice for the student body."

I love the coal industry and the commerce of the USA. I love the oil industry, gas industry, solar industry, and all of the businesses of the USA.

That is a great thing they did giving $7 million like that. Why don't any of the libs do that?

A tragic message to send to college students. Please--keep the corporations out of the dorms for Pete's sake. Particularly an extractive technology that is so devastating to people. They should have a quick education on the coal industry before this happens. Kudos to the faculty representative and the student body president for voting their conscience. So, if the student body does not want it, and the faculty does not want it....who DOES?

$7 million given for education. That is more than the Cap N Trade environmentalists gave. In fact many of the environmentalists are taking money from education.

Cap N Trade eliminates jobs and money
Our Industries create jobs and money

The King Coal Cat House is yet another embarrassment for UK, which recently spent $30 million for a redundant basketball practice facility and another $30 million to sign Calipari for five years while the rest of the campus crumbles. Naming it the "Wildcat Coal Lodge" is an outrage because it pays homage to "coal wildcatting," as illegal coal mining is known. UK President Todd has publicly called for UK to become a "Top 20" school, but that canard is now utterly transparent unless he means for UK to be renamed the Kentucky School for Basketball.

Beware, prospective UK students: if you plan to major in something besides basketball or football, expect crummy, 50+ year old facilities.

Seven million? that's all?

For a building that'll be there a hundred years or more?

I hope that's just a 10 year lease.

The Black Lung Lodge is replacing the Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge, which was built only 30 years ago. There's nothing wrong with it, except that it isn't brand new with gold-plated plumbing.

I know where that’s at. It’s right down the street from the Crystal Cathedral of Climate Change.

Forgot to state:
Coal is a legitimate business and brings thousands of needed jobs to the state. I live in the Western Coalfields. There is nothing wrong with coal mining done the right way, it is just that so few companies prefer to be right. There is some irresistible desire on the part of most coal producers to inflict as much harm on the environment as possible. This is done often when there is no monetary gain to be realized from the practice.

No such thing as "done the right way". And your opinion is biased.

People need to understand. KY basketball is not a college sport, it is an enterprise. It generates millions of dollars a year, and the wealthy and ego laden must have their names attached in some manner.
I quit watching UK basketball years ago when it became readily apparent that the education of the players is only tolerated not encouraged. The only reason to attend UK on a basketball scholarship is to enhance ones chances of a pro contract.
I don't condemn the practice per se. I just don't find it enjoyable, since I don't care for NBA basketball at all.
