Late-night comic Craig Ferguson had to hold his tongue about the Bush administration during his performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner in 2008.

In his new memoir, American On Purpose, Ferguson reveals how surreal that night was for him, from bonding with Bush over their struggles with alcoholism to catching Cheney ogling the breasts of Ferguson's wife.

On meeting the Cheneys, Ferguson recounts that his wife discussed art with Mrs. Cheney, who proudly described the Picasso sketches she owned. When Megan [Ferguson's wife] asked Cheney where she hung the artwork, Cheney's response stunned them:

"Oh we don't," replied Mrs. C. They're nudes, and we have grandchildren. We don't want them to see them when they come over."

"But they're Picassos," protested Megan.

"But they're nudes," smiled Mrs. Cheney dangerously.

I put a hand on Megan's elbow. I didn't want trouble. You don't want to be on the Cheney shit list... Once they were gone, I told Megan that Dick Cheney had been ogling her breasts.

When Ferguson met the president, Bush was standing on his own in the corner:

He smiled that big goofy smile of his and walked over, a moment in my life so surreal it's matched only by the time I was pursued by what I imagined to be killer ducks during a bad acid trip...

For months before the event, I had fantasized about what I would say to the president if I did have a private conversation with him. Would I take him to task for everything he had done that I so profoundly disagreed with, berate him for his foreign policy, his strategy in the Middle East, his disregard for the Kyoto Protocol and the Geneva Conventions?... I was unable to resist the opportunity to voice my dissent, and throwing caution to the wind, I charged him with a biting... "Hello, sir, nice to meet you"...

He disarmed and surprised me because he wasn't what I expected. I'd watched way too much MSNBC and was prepared to meet a drooling moron...

We had been talking about Scotland; he had visited for a while when he was younger and expressed a sort of puzzled awe at the amount of drinking that was done there, hinting that he had taken part in a fairly major way. We talked a little about the dangers of booze.

Here is Ferguson's performance at the dinner:

I detest Cheney, but I'd be hard pressed to not ogle, too. She's a fine looking woman.

I'm just wondering if Cheney bares his lower teeth as he's clenching his jaw, when he ogles women's breasts.....

Absolutely horrifying if he uses that face when he's aroused as well.

I love watching Craig. He gets it. Must have been most amusing to watch Cheney's face during the ogling.

All joking aside we must push our Democrats to investigate and prosecute
those in the Bush-Cheney Administration that violated our laws,
Especially our Federal Anti-Torture Laws. It is a Federal Capital Crime after all just to conspire to torture. Any official that advocates Torture is dangerous beyond measure.
These people Must Be Stopped Now!

I'm surprised that Cheney had a sexual thought. True, he has children, but I can't picture him participating in the process. But then, he seems to be a fan of inflicting torture on others.

He makes his wife wear a bag over her face, so she can never testify as to the identity of her assailant.

Can I just ask a simple question of the folks posting here. How would kids you know react to a Picasso nude? The kids I know would either ignore it or giggle. I think the problem is all inside the Cheney's own heads.

As for ogling the fellow guests, that does suggest a certain lack of social skills.

I grew up around Picasso nudes (prints, not originals.)

My mother has a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degree -- she went back to university to finish her degree and then teach -- when we were school-age children.

I even posed as a figure model in one of her Life Drawing classes when I was a minor -- thirteen? fourteen? -- and her regular model was sick. I'm sure this would be illegal today, but in the '70's at the university, we considered the nude human body to be an appropriate and natural subject for artists, not pornography.

An artist might draw an abstract, a tree, a nude, a cloud formation, a rabbit racing from a fox. One was expected to view them all with the libido in check -- it was ALL art, not porn.

I don't remember being titillated by Picasso's work, not even in my hormone-flooded teens. If I had stammered and giggled over "Boy Leading a Horse" (which graced our kitchen for years) my mother would have rolled her eyes and told me to stop being a blithering idiot and go do my homework.

I wonder what they do with the paintings then... I mean that's kind of a shame to own such art and not display it. Why own it then?

Who would have guessed that Picasso is just elitist's porn.....he probably keeps it under the mattress.

Exactly! Thank you! It's a shame that more people don't understand how personal sexual infidelity is so much more damaging to this country than starting unjustified wars or ignoring international treaties!!

How sad that great art ends up with these terribly dumb and horrible people. I bet their grandchildren have more eye for art than theyd do.

Again, a Lefty uses ridicule to criticize in the absence of any substance.

...he meant the pretty boys that she calls friends, right...
women don't have breasts without their men.

There is a rule in women's locker rooms...
no cameras or cell phones with cameras...

Its just as well they make some of us close our eyes and change...
I have spent my life looking away from other women
to protect them from the sharp objects
I carry within.

Yes, this is unimportant, or at least the title of the article should be "Craig Ferguson dishes on 2008 WH Correspondents Dinner," something like that. Let's not blame Cheney for sneezing.

With no offense to Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson --- but I can't blame V.P. Cheney from being temporarily fixated on Mrs. Ferguson's cleavage. (And I'm certainly no fan of former V.P. Cheney.) But I checked over photos of the event and the bare chest area and cleavage presented by Mrs. Ferguson's dress worn that evening was quite pronounced. Frankly, a little too much so. I would have had a hard time keeping my eyes focused upward if I were standing near her.

Wonder how Lynne's going to hide her novel from the grand kids - the novel with the lesbian passion in it.
