The Voice of San Diego supports its lean and mean nonprofit operation with a combination of advertising and public radio-style contributions from foundations and users. Editor Donohue looks to “own” certain beats rather than trying to cover everything, preferring to follow up on a tip no one else is investigating in lieu of sending yet another reporter to a well-covered press conference. Its sunny offices are a far cry from a gritty newsroom, but its approach to journalism is pure old school shoe leather.
