Sting: Obama "Exactly What We Need In The World"

Sting

NEW YORK — Sting isn't a religious man, but he says President Barack Obama might be a divine answer to the world's problems.

"In many ways, he's sent from God," he joked in an interview, "because the world's a mess."

But Sting is serious in his belief that Obama is the best leader to navigate the world's problems. In an interview on Wednesday, the former Police frontman said that he spent some time with Obama and "found him to be very genuine, very present, clearly super-smart, and exactly what we need in the world."

"I can't think of anyone better qualified because of his background, his education, particularly in regard to Islam," he said.

Still, Sting acknowledged the president had a "difficult job" ahead of him.

The British singer, who released the seasonal album "On A Winter's Night" this week, said he's fascinated by American politics, Obama, and also by Obama's opponents on the right.

"It's aggressive and violent and full of fear," he said of the backlash against Obama. "They don't want change, they want things to feel the same because they feel safe there."

Sting, 58, said he's hopeful that the world's problems can be dealt with, but is frustrated that "we seem to be living in a currency of medieval ideas."

"My hope is that we can start talking about real issues and not caring about whether God cares about your hemline or your color," he said. "We are here to evolve as one family, and we can't be separate anymore."

Some celebrities get knocked for being active and speaking out. I mean, who are you, Bono or Sting, to voice an opinion about world affairs?

Righties should be admiring these guys for being good capitalists, making their careers on their own terms, with their own specific values, where people are valued above all.

Sting is one of the single most watched rock stars planetwide, the Police did a world tour before they were worldwide stars; to this day for me, an amazing feat. He's entitled to his opinion, and in his position as a role model, to express it!

Repugs should stick to elevator music. Real artists are always left leaning.

Wow, the negative comments here are interesting.

"It's aggressive and violent and full of fear," he said of the backlash against Obama.

Sounds like a few of you folks.

Obama's refusing to enforce the laws that are already on the books:

Wall Street's N@ked Swindle
A scheme to flood the market with counterfeit stocks helped kiII Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers — and the feds have yet to bust the culprits
by Matt Taibbi in The Rolling Stone

Pay particular attention to the secret meeting held at the Fed by Bernanke and Geithner just prior to Bear Stearns' meltdown.

Obama's refusal to investigate and prosecute, his insistence on "looking forward and not back" on everything done by the Bush administration, from the war and t0rture to the biggest heist of Americans' money since the Savings & Loan heist during the Reagan administration (which had been the biggest heist ever), makes Obama a co-conspirator.

Sting's a tax exile. In 1980, he moved to Galway in Ireland to avoid paying taxes.

He likes to think of himself as something of an environmentalist, as he's advocated against rainforest destruction.

The kindest thing might be to say that Sting's not paying attention and doesn't know that Obama's signed off on the most destructive form of logging of all -- Clear-cutting:

The Obama administration approved the sale of timber in a roadless national forest in Alaska. The Tongass National Forest is a 17 million acre temperate rain forest in southeast Alaska, which is home to both endangered species and native Alaskan tribes. It is the largest temperate rain forest in the United States.

It should be noted that Sting's own carbon footprint is something like 5000 (more planet earths are needed to supply him with the resources he squanders personally) -- He's got lavish home estates on just about every continent in the world.

On a personal side, when both of Sting's parents died in 1987 of cancer, he skipped both of their funerals he said, "because the media fuss would be disrespectful (to his parents)".

That's some ego.

You're right, he shouldn't be making any kind of comments on politics.

So... what's YOUR background? Can you fill us in?
05:06 PM on 10/31/2009
I was referring to Sting's comment about Obama's background. That was Obama's resume I would like to see filled in with something....anything.
05:48 AM on 10/30/2009
Agreed!
03:24 AM on 10/30/2009
"..sent from God"?

Oh really? It seems that you and Mr Obama share the same opinion in this regard.

It is not a little tiresome when celebrities, be they Sting, Streisand or Spears pontificate on matters well beyond their remit.
