Only difference MA was a Hapsburg, a royal, and Bruni is an illegitimate child and nowhere near an aristocrat.

amusing. But if we are looking for historic parallels, a more fitting possibility is Marguerite Valois (espoused to Henry IV) who was born of Italian mother, spoke several foreign languages and was highly proficient in music and philosophy (folk-rock and philosophers in Carla's case). Eventually she divorced her ever philandering husband and ended up as a "mentor of the arts and benefactress of the poor". I can see Carla Bruni's future in this story.

Bruni is vaguely irrelevant but I'm sure, essentially benign.

One hopes Sarkozy's next wife will possess a bit more - ahem - gravitas.

I like the woman. She earned her own money. She has been honest about many things. She is dealing with everyone judging her. There must be a lot of glass houses out there.

Duh. I wonder what took them so long to finally catch on.
But her husband is worse. He is a bitter little man with a Napoleon complex and his far right ideology is just as silly as everything she does.

True that she is heir to the Pirelli tire fortune, but I'm pretty sure that she made a bundle all by herself modeling in Europe.

i think it shows how fickle the public is. at first the french LOVED her, she was creative, a model, sexy and made her husband happy - how wonderful. now, that the glow of love has waned, they turn on her.

are you listening obamas? careful, tread lightly. the public are fickle. they may love you today, but what about tomorrow?

get real. people complain when the obamas go out to dinner for their anniversary or take a week off when congress is on vacation for one month. they complain when they open the white house for cultural events. they complain when their children fly on the same plane with the president. they complain when the obamas try to bring the olympics to the us. they complain when they breathe!

just wait until the obamas start hiding out in their castle for weeks after taking a month-long summer vacation . . .

I thought the complain when she was compared to Bruni was she did not exhibit the elitist attitude enough, that Michelle's clothes were cheap etc... The difference is simple, Bruni has been out of touch for a longtime and that's life. Everyone is different and have different interest. So you get a life too

The French are like this though. I have studied french culture eight years, and can tell you there is always something to revolt about with the French. May not be the same interpretation here. Depends really.

Carla Bruni was born into a world of wealth as was Marie Antoinette. Although France's current first lady was born into the fairyland of wealth and privilege she at least has access to media that show how other people live. Marie Antoinette had no such information technology, was totally clueless, and she paid the price with her head. Much later, the advent of photography began to make a dent in how people viewed the world in its totality.

>>The unflattering magazine portrait comes as Miss Bruni enjoys an extended holiday at one of her Mediterranean homes - just a few weeks after her month-long summer break.>>

but, but, but her boosters and sycophants (who are also mrs. obama's biggest critics) claim that she is a hard-working, accessible, beloved first lady with loads of first lady accomplishments. the same people who pilloried the obamas for week's vacation.

Well, I can at least name one of her "accomplishments". Upon her advise, recommendation and insistence, Sarkozy appointed a self-confessed Thaliand "young boys" sex tourism frequenter, as Minister of CULTURE no less.
Oh, but I'm sure her boosters and sycophants are still proud of her "contributions".

wow! not to mention, boinking half of europe (including a father and son). that counts as a "hands on" accomplishment! lol.

Well, you can't blame her for being born into wealth, but mentally, she does seem to live in fairyland.
