What's Your Reaction?

Michael Day in Rome | The Independent

Even by the mafia's brutal standards, the killing of a man smoking a cigarette outside a central Naples bar in broad daylight was shocking in its ruthlessness.

But perhaps more disturbing is the reaction of witnesses, who can be seen in a video that has been released by Naples prosecutors in an unprecedented step to try and to find the killer. As the Camorra hitman dispatches his victim with clinical efficiency, a bystander casually checks her lottery scratch card and walks away. Others peer at the body and continue about their business as if the shooting was a normal part of daily life.

The CCTV footage - and the aftermath of the crime - give a troubling insight into the extent of the Naples mafia's control of their territory. Although the hit took place on 11 May this year, and the face of the killer is clearly visible on the recording, with witnesses present, investigators have so far met with silence.

Journalist Roberto Saviano, who has a permanent armed escort since exposing the activities of the Naples mafia in his best selling book Gomorrah, called the killing a "classic Camorra hit, very well planned and executed without fanfare". He added that the video "shows what little value these people have for human life," in a recorded commentary posted on la Repubblica's website. "The thing that strikes you," he said, "is the absolute serenity of the killer."

I live in Naples. I am not a member of the Camorra. Like most people I know, I have absolutely no contact with those types of people. I go about my daily activities in one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world. I enjoy wandering around those very streets where people say not to go. Most of the Neapolitans I meet there and in the rest of the city are kind, friendly and hospitable people. They also know that the authorities are unable to protect them, so they protect themselves by avoiding getting involved in 'turf wars' between criminal organizations (NOT by buying guns). They are just minding their own business, which is the most intelligent thing to do. If they step forward, they, or their families will pay dearly, guaranteed. It is not right, but it is what it is. Try not to judge people for doing the intelligent thing, which is the RIGHT thing if you live here.

The people of Napoli know too well NOT to interfere.
That is if you treasure your life or that of your family.

The truly sad thing about the Italian judicial system is that murderers don't get a very tough sentence. They are usually out in 5 to 10 years. I recall a case where a guy murder his girl friend, and her intire family before he was caught. He did about 4 years in prison and was let out, and guess what, he completed the job. That was about 10 years ago, I hear he got something like a 15 year sentence. Do a killing in Italy, you might not get it too bad.

It's an easy trap to fall into judging the demeanor of or lack of intervention by bystanders to shocking events. Remember that we use words like shocking and horrifying to describe these acts.

You're a little off huh? You related a very simple comment to a video game and experience points. It speaks more to how you already see things than to what the original commenter may have been getting at.

Just a couple of things I find curious about this street murder; that is what it is a street murder, one should refrain from using the euphemisms hit or hit man.
Why does the killer have total disregard for the security cameras.
Why do the criminals not think that public execution of enemies is going to bring anything other than public outrage and a concerted effort by the authorities to put an end to murder in the streets.
There is a lot more going on than a few people to shocked to react to an event outside there rationale.

Why should one refrain from using the terms that the Naples police clearly ascribed to the killing? Does this offend your sensibilities? Obviously, the police are aware of the goings on in their city.

That's how it's done, you never see it coming and you never hear it. It's not a good hit if you can't cry at the funeral.

You know maybe the guy shot owed money, or was a rat. I'm sure there are some other circumstances not being told where the dead guy hurt business. I mean of course it is violent and all, but well, sometimes you just have to do away with things hurting your business.

This is the sort of business ethic we need to instill in our rising youth, because what matters in the end is the well-being of your monetary interests. Health insurance and banking executives could learn a thing or too here.

Well, no I would not necessarily say that. But we should keep in mind that it wasn't exactly a saint here that got hit.

What witnesses?

The sequence I saw showed people, including the ultimate victim, milling around outside a store. The killer walked past them and entered the buiding. He surveyed the small crowd inside and it appeared no one was leaving immediately. He is seen reachig under his shirt for his pistol and he heads back outside. The only person in frot of the store at that time is the victim who takes two to the head.

You didn't look very closely. The first shot was to the upper arm, near the shoulder. The second, obviously, was to the head. Pause at 0:21 and you'll see the blast area. =(

Who will step forward and identify this killer?

We already know the answer.
