Billy Boyd, Aspen Resident, Finally Finds Cell Phone After Epic Search

ASPEN, Colo. — A determined Colorado man found his missing cell phone at a trash dump after dialing the number and listening for the ring.

Billy Boyd says he dropped the phone Tuesday while raking his yard outside Aspen and unknowingly scooped it into a bag of leaves.

He says he didn't realize his mistake until after he left the leaves at a city recycling center.

Boyd says he could hear the phone ringing but couldn't reach it because of the grate across the recycling bin. By the time he reached city officials, the bin had been emptied onto a massive leaf pile at the dump.

After a half hour of dialing, listening and sifting at the dump, Boyd found his phone.

Landfill manager Chris Hoofnagle says it's the first time he can remember anyone finding a lost item at the dump.

I often locate my truck in crowded parking lots by clicking my key fob. Someone is going to make a lot of money when they market inexpensive unobtrusive stick-on audio signalers (I picture the little musical greeting card noisemakers with adhesive backings) keyed to a unique signal so I can find my key fob. And my tv remote. And my eyeglasses.

It would be fun if, instead of audio tones, the transmitter would say "Where are you?" and the receivers would say "Over here!"

I dropped my cell phone in a work parking lot. By the time I got back, it was covered in snow and the battery died. I did find it the hard way and still use it. I was lucky that I went back before the lot was plowed.
