Doug Holtzeakin

The Washington Post:

If history had taken a different course, Doug Holtz-Eakin would be inside the McCain White House driving the Republican president's domestic agenda, including health-care reform. But now, one year after Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) lost the presidential election, the man who was by McCain's side as the campaign's top health-care guru remains unemployed -- and his COBRA health coverage is running out.

Irony of ironies, it gets worse. Holtz-Eakin, who is about to start shopping for insurance on the individual market, is 51. And he has one of those pesky "preexisting conditions" that insurance companies often cite in denying coverage.

My message to Doug Holtz-Eakin: It's a different story when you're on the receiving end, isn't it?

Lets see if he has a "road to Damascus" conversion when his 51 year-old arse can't get medical care without going bankrupt. Devoid of the ability to empathize, Repugs only see the light when something affects them directly.

this is just another illustration of how anyone's life can take a turn and leave them homeless, unemployed, sick or dispariging. if this could happen to a republican strategist, it certainly can and will happen to your average joe or josephine.
.
take for example bernie madoff and his little ponzi scheme.
all those investors thought they were well-informed, safe and insulated from economic harm, and look at them - most lost their life savings with no way to recover
.
it would be nice if we americans could have a basic safety net of social services, and truly be a beacon of freedom (from worry) that we advertise to the rest of the world..
.

Well, I suggest he write McCon and explain his situation the same way I did and maybe he'll get the same patronizing form letter about why Senator John knows best, pat pat. Karma guys, it's just starting.

It's called poetic justice. Now that the Palins are unemployed do they have health insurance? Anyone know? Have they been forced to deal with their child's pre-existing condition?

"You can't live your life in the land of what might have been."

Well it seems as though Doug Holtz-Eakin certainly can't live his life if he can't find a private "healthcare" insurance company to take his money AND cover his claims.

He still supports his Party of NO quality affordable healthcare for EVERY american ... even though what goes around may come around to him. I suppose he's amassed enough millions to out-of-pocket cover any denied claims.

This guy is still well-off. He may be singing a different tune if he's still unemployed in 2011 (although by that time he will be hired by some Republican campaigning to deny health care to people who are unemployed). Political affiliation is not as fundamental a facet of one's beliefs as a person's income and financial worth.

I don't really wish this to anyone, but in a way it is good that it happens to some high profile Republcan. In this way they can gain some first hand experience which may lead to more understanding about the situation.

I want what Congress has or Congress can have what I have.

It's that simple.

Congress has a choice of private insurance plans, financed by taxpayers. It's the same system we have now, expect we pay on April 15 and never see the actual price. It does nothing to control costs or profiteering.

What you should want is Medicare for all.
