Nancy Pelosi's Diet Consists Mainly Of Chocolate Ice Cream

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi might appear to be all business and no pleasure, but the all-powerful, pantsuit-wearing politician actually has a soft spot for soft serve. Vanessa Grigoriadis' New York Magazine article about poll numbers, health care, and credit included this sweet tidbit on the speaker's eating habits:

Chocolate ice cream is the staple of Pelosi's diet: She doesn't cook herself, so except for a salad for lunch and whatever an aide hands her for dinner, that's what she eats. [...] "The other day, she came in at 8:45 a.m. carrying a pint of Haagen-Dazs with an inch left in it--she'd eaten the whole thing on the way in. She handed it off to Michael, and then two hours later, she said, 'Where's that ice cream? Can I eat the rest of that?' "

Read carefully, a salad, dinner and ice cream, that's it, no snacking no grazing, probably very busy being a senator not planting her butt on the sofa watching TV, might explain why she doesn't weigh 400 lbs.

I have personally witnessed this. I was at an event, Pelosi arrives, and like radar... she heads straight to where the ice cream station is. I'm trying to do small-talk with her, but she is focused like a laser on the ice cream choices. She decides on a vanilla with chocolate ripples. The "scooper" guy gives her one scoop. (She looks so tiny.) She asks him for another also, and tells him to "get way down in there" to get lots of chocolate. My small-talk is going nowhere, so finally I say," Madame Speaker, I hear you eat ice cream every day." She replied, "I most certainly do." She then devoured both scoops, enjoying it -- then departed to greet the main crowd.

After probably 40 years of dieting, I've finally reached the point in my life where chocolate ice cream and any other no-no food is considered normal eating habits.

I figure it this way.....I deserve it. I worked 45-50 years mostly serving others. I watched everything I ate. Every Christmas week was filled with making Swedish Tea Rings for all the neighbors and making sure there were fresh cinnamon rolls for Christmas breakfast. Oh, and then the dozen pies that got made each year, also for neighbors and family gatherings. I ate salads....­they ate cinnamon rolls...ho­w dumb of me.

I've reached the age where I don't care. To this day, cinnamon rolls, homemade Italian bread filled with parmesan, oregano, garlic and other Italian spices and dabs of coconut cake are true desires, so I eat them. If I had known 40 years ago that if I did these goodies with moderation, I could have spent my entire life just as happy as a little lark.

My sister thinks chocolate is it's own food group. She's right!
