What's Your Reaction?

Glenn Beck and the organization PETA make strange bedfellows, but they've found a common cause to rally around: criticizing Al Gore for hypocrisy because he is an environmentalist who eats meat.

Ingrid Newkirk, founder and president of PETA, joined a delighted Glenn Beck tonight to rip Gore as a "steakaholic" and a "baby" who is betraying his own movement:

You can give in your SUV. You can trade it away. You can change your lightbulbs, these are the things he suggests. You can shower with a friend, but it's still not enough if you continue to eat meat...

He says it's very hard for him to go vegetarian. He's admitted that, and I think he's basically a steakaholic, and he needs to stop being a baby and just decide.

Beck is quick declare that he does not agree with a single thing that PETA stands for, but he nonetheless respects them because they're one of the only two organizations he finds "consistent, they don't play the Washington game... They just mean what they say and say what they mean." (The other organization he respects in this way is, of course, the NRA.)

Fox news discovered it was legal to report false news a few years back and ever since then they have reported lies and opinions as truth. So if you watch Fox news and you feel like you just might have been lied to, you have, so go find a more reliable source of news.

I've been saying it for years now: The PETA leadership is insane. Just look
who they align themselves with. Give your money to the American Kennel Assoc or the ASPCA. PETA is not what they claim to be.

What about all those animals the ASPCA "rescued" that are now living in cramped cages in "shelters"?

How about animals killed by PETA in THEIR shelter?

Y'know... The one which they don't like to talk about!

What about the animals PETA takes in/rescues that they immediately put to death.

Their Virginia Beach location took in over 2200 animals in 2008. You know how many got adopted out? 7. 7 out of 2200. You know how many they put down? Over 2100.

Did you know that PETA has testified in court that they own a giant meat freezer for storing the dead bodies of the dogs and cats they put to sleep?

Look for yourself:

Ingrid Newkirk thinks people shouldn't be allowed to own animals. There are plenty of quotes to back that up. It seems her organization is trying to make that happen one puppy at a time.

Peta does not always represent my interests as a vegan but this is one concern where Peta and I agree. You are not an environmentalist if you still eat meat.

So if we eat meat you don't want our help with the environment?

What a dumb story. How long will Glenn's show remain on the air? I'm so sick of this guy!

The only meat I eat is meat that is raised free-range. Keeping livestock sedentary makes them unhealthy; then these livestock are shot full of garbage that causes cancer/tumors in humans...pathetic. Freeranging livestock keeps them active and healthy so they don't need to be shot full of harmful garbage. Personally, I look on meat packaging to ensure that the meat is not shot full of antibiotics and/or steroids. Remember that businesses survive or fail on supply-demand; we need to demand healthy/safe food and not purchase manufactured garbage that food manufacturers try to pass as "food."

I'm a vegan and I am frustrated when Al Gore tries to save the environment while supporting factory farming. How can you preach "efficiency" and consume the most inefficient food available? Yes there are varying degrees of efficiency when it comes to mother nature producing food. We're not cutting down the rainforest to grow broccoli and bell peppers, we're cutting down the rainforest to make room for fields of corn and grain that are generally not suitable for human consumption. These fields of corn and other grain will replace rainforests because we are addicted to concentrated calorie packets called meat. Every time you eat a highly concentrated calorie packet your brain rewards you with seratonin. Rats will push the cocaine button til they die, we will push the chop-down-the-rainforest button til we die.

Another reason why I don't like PETA. You would think these people would willing become slaves to animals if they had the abilities that humans have and rule the world.

I have notified my accountant to stop any new donations to PETA. I'm also will take them out of my will today.

I'm a vegetarian and I do not agree with eating meat., However, half the vegetarian I know wear leather shoes and drive luxury cars with leather seats. Many Yoga students I know still have fish once in the while. I'm not going to judge them for this. What is published something that was watched by millions about how certain people I know are not "fully" vegetarian. Wouold that be right?

Al Gore has did more for this country than most politicians. To honor Glen Beck by putting down Al Gore is stupidity and highly unacceptable. This lady needs to get her priorities straight and spend all time helping animals and not propping up people like Glen Beck. Have some class!!

If you ever believed in what PETA stood for (I doubt you ever gave them a cent), you would be vegan, not vegetarian.

You can play partisan politics. PETA is interested in helping animals, regardless of humans' political persuasion. Gore is not above reproach. He needs to be vegan if he wants to have any credibility.

Factory farming is the number one emissions contributor to global warming, animal waste is toxifying our groundwater, rivers and lakes, and antibiotics in animal feed will (sooner or later) lead to the development of a superpathogen that kills untold numbers of people in a sweeping pandemic. Humans consume 50 BILLION chickens each year, and you think our planet can sustain that? You have a lot of research to do if you don't think eating meat is killing our planet.

You are wrong. The number one emission contributor is over population. Number 2 is the underground coal fires, look it up.

Glenn Beck doesn't even believe in climate change. He used her as a pawn as a means to an end. He could give a h3ll about the environment, he just wanted to take down a Nobel prize winner so his low IQ viewers could have a laugh.

Eating meat does not kill our planet, we humans breeding like rats is. We wouldn't even need factory farms if there weren't so many of us.

We've been eating meat for hundreds of thousands of years. It is why they call us omnivores.

PETA does go overboard at times, but their fundamental cause is solid!

Contrary to what most people believe, we do not have to kill to sustain life. We can, for example, pick the FRUIT from the tree without killing the tree.

Those who want to go through life as "walking graveyards" for the cow, pig, chicken, etc., have that right, and I would be the first in line to defend that right! But why anyone WANTS to eat the blood and guts of an animal is way beyond my understanding. Just walking through the meat section in the store makes me sick to my stomach.

Studies show over and over that meat is responsible for many types of cancers, heart disease and many other health problems.

"You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity". ...Ralph Waldo Emerson

I just assumed Al Gore was a vegetarian. If he is as concerned about the planet as he says, he really does need to stop eating meat ... this is indeed a serious contradiction on his part.

"We are sick of war, we don't want to fight, and yet we gorge ourselves upon the DEAD".
... George Bernard Shaw

In my opinion, the eating of animal flesh is one of the most repulsive practices known to mankind!

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:09 AM on 11/05/2009

I respect your view, but the thing that annoys me is when people try to push their opinions on other people. I have no right to push meat in your face as you have no right to push veganism or vegetarianism on me. I like being able to breathe, but I also like my chicken fried.

And we live with the consequences of your actions, and the actions of all the gorged meat-eaters who only care about the satisfaction of their taste buds. As a society, we pay for your collective arterial blockages and diabetes and various forms of cancer. And we collectively pay with our health and welfare as our environment is destroyed to produce cheap meat. Did you know 1/3 of the earth's landmass is devoted to animal agriculture? I think people should have ultimate freedom of choice, so long as they are not harming anyone else. But your fried chicken addiction harms me every day of my life, even if you don't realize it or care not to acknowledge it.

"Studies show over and over that meat is responsible for many types of cancers, heart disease and many other health problems."

Largely because of the hormones, chemicals and offal being fed to the animals and their living conditions in CAFO's. There is such a thing as organic meat where the animals are raised by small local farms in humane conditions. These farms also, obviously, have a much smaller environmental impact. Furthermore, there's such a thing as moderation in how much meat and dairy you consume.

Sorry, but what bugs me about so many vegetarians and vegans is how preachy they can get and how they can say, oh, yes, I respect your choice but it's soooo immoral and soooo disgusting and you're going to get cancer and you deserve it! (I have many times, including here at HuffPo, seen that last sentinment, and delivered with the same smug certainty of extremist Christians who announce "You're going to hell!") If you really respect others' choices, keep the moral superiority and emotionalisms to yourself.

There is nothing wrong with eating meat as long as you get it from an Organic Farm or similar, locally, and only in moderation. If you don't like Beef, try Bison, Kangaroo, or Ostrich....

Why? Maybe she'll influence some of those waddling meateaters who stay glued to Fox 24/7. Besides, she is stating the obvious and it needs to be said, loudly: No real environmentalist will continue to eat meat while talking out of the other side of his mouth. It IS the major effront to the environment (and public health).

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:31 AM on 11/05/2009

Being an environmentalist has nothing to do with eating meat. Those are two different categories. Making sure that people can breathe in the future is a far cry from eating pork chops. Animals eating animals is a part of nature.

Holier than thou types make me ill. I love how you neglect to mention the differences between CAFO sourced meat and organic, because of course that doesn't fit your agenda. Honestly, if YOU don't wish to eat meat, that is fine and dandy. Just stop acting like a proselytizing Christian about it.

I didn't know that PETA was responsible for deciding who is an environmentalist and who is not. I did not know they owned the rights to the definition. I have sympathy for PETAS' goals, but have long abhorred their tactics. While it is true that the consumption of livestock is a leading cause of global warming, I would much rather have someone like Al Gore doing their best to promote environmental issues. Is PETA and the likes of GB and his viewers (who let's be honest, don't give two hoots about global warming or the environment) going to discount all the positive contributions that Gore's documentaries, books and lectures have made to the environmental movement? Apparently so. It must be so nice to live in a world where everything is so perfectly black and white. Throw the baby out with bath water. Mr Gore eats red meat. Therefore, NONE of his points about the environment must be valid. How sad.
