Lloyd Grove: Don't Count Leno Out
The Daily Beast:
With his ratings tanking, critics and competitors smell blood. But the hardest working comic in show business has always had the last laugh.

Jay Leno is America's comfort food. We missed his tepid jokes and celebrity cajoling over the summer. He was the last face we saw at night and he put the period at the end of the day. You knew he LOVED the Tonight Show...it was his life. The biggest mistake NBC made, in my opinion, was to assume that bringing Conan in before Jay got stale would appeal to the young crowd and keep them watching The Tonight Show. I've read through page after page of comments all over the web on how people see the NBC changes and have reached a conclusive opinion: Jay Leno needs to take back the Tonight Show. Give Conan the earlier slot if you must, but let Leno do what he does best: tuck us in and tell us a story (or a corny joke)! We miss you Jay!!!
I love Jay Leno, I've watched him for years. I'm actually glad he's on earlier now. I'm rootin' for ya Jay.
Can't Leno get off the stage? Why not give someone else an opportunity to seeks the limelight? American has so much talent why do we have to look at Leno again?
too late
I already counted him out long ago
He is toast.
Exactly. As long as his show makes a little money and doesn't lose the affiliates, he's not going anywhere. As soon as he starts losing the affiliates, he's toast. The real question is "who will be the first affiliate to drop his show and run news at 10PM."
I counted Leno out from the get-go. Apparently, so have many, many others.
This article sounded so supportive, yet, all it conveyed to me that everyone involved with the show are just dripping with denial.
Wow. How old is Lloyd Grove anyway? 65? Because the only people that are that in-the-tank for Leno seem to be senior citizens.
Leno's show is just a weak re-hash of his days on the Tonight Show. Same band, many of the same bits, an interview or two, and the occasional staff comedian doing some schtick.
The sooner he fades permanently into the lights of Las Vegas, the better.
My prediction is that, despite Jay's best efforts, the 10pm experiment will ultimately fail. Personally I watched day 1, and have surfed through it a few times since, but a late-night format doesn't hold my interest in prime time.
I don't think this will be the end for Leno, however. i don't know the details of contracts and such, but Conan O'Brien has not proved to be up to the task in the 11:30 spot. I think Jay will move back as soon as it's possible, as NBC will soon grow tired of finishing a distant second to Letterman.
i count him out of my viewing options. always have. his monopoly of the 10 PM slot on NBC makes it easier to decide what to watch. it eliminates a whole network.
I gotta say, I've never really liked they guy that much or watched his show much, but once in a while I'm channel surfing at 10pm and all that's on are reruns or depressing stuff ... and I stop and watch him, get a chuckle and that's all good. It's kind of nice to have the option
December will be the shows most important month. Baseball and high school football will be over while college will be in the bowl season. The other networks will be in full rerun mode after Nov sweeps. If Mr Leno doesn't make in roads over the holidays the future will look pretty bleak.
The lack of response here proves that Leno isn't popular with young Progressives, but Letterman is .
As a big Leno fan, I guess that explains why I am a moderate older person.
lol ... you're kidding right? LOL
The majority of people don't even think about politics until an election comes up.
My point is proven. There is no interest in Leno here.
Progressives watch Letterman.
Moderates watch Leno
