Prince Of Persia Trailer

Jake Gyllenhaal, action hero!

Disney had released a trailer for their summer 2010 release "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," based on the video game which tracks "an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world."

Gyllenhaal morphed into the prince with longer hair, an accent, and some serious abs (glimpsed 1:30 into the below).

Former Bond girl Gemma Arterton plays the princess.

Quick Poll

'Prince of Persia' looks like ...

A must see!

Maybe a rental

A movie I will never see

I've been a fan of Gyllenhaal's since seeing 'Donny Darko' but I can't quite wrap my head around him in such a movie let alone with an english accent.

I remember seeing stills of him all buff for the part and he does look delicious. I'll have to wait and see I guess.

Big Jake fan since "October Sky"!

And I'm a 64 year-old gal. grins.

Also love epics, Jerry B., and Jake's abs.

Don't go to theaters, but I'll be grabbing this up on blu-ray for my home theater as soon as it's released.

Since I'm operating on an "expiration date," hope I live that long. LOL!

Okay, guys, calm down about the whole "the cast isn't Persian" thing. My best friend is Persian and when I asked her what she thought about it, she said this:

1. Persians, Iranians what have you, are technically Caucasian so it is not the same thing as a white person playing a black or Latino-- Jake and Persians are both white, soooo it's not a big deal. Basic misconception about Persians.

2. She's excited about the movie and we will be seeing it together as soon as it comes out.

3. She finds the fact that I was disconcerted about the casting ridicuous. She said it's like if an Italian played an Englishman. There wouldn't be this much fuss.

No offense, but you're persian friend isn't necessarily a barometer to whether or not the public would or would not find this offensive. I get the fact that Gyllenhaal provides star power and some people might not find it offensive but just explain to me why is the 'Prince of Persia' speaking in a terrible English accent...I mean couldn't Gyllenhaal even attempt a modified persian accent ? As a person of color and from the region it's just hollywood being hollywood...I would bet the house that the villian in this movie has a heavy and 'scary' middle eastern accent. Cheers

That's a bit ridiculous, by definition, all people of the middle east and even south asia are also technically 'caucasian'. Your friend seems to suffer from the dialectic delusion that being caucasian is something to aspire to. It's an identity crisis and part of the supremacy complex that many from these regions need to get over.

And although there obviously is nothing wrong with caucasians, nor anything deficient in Gyllenhaal as an actor, it'd be nice to see more authentic faces and languages spoken in representative films. Where these could have been opportunities for cross cultural learning, they instead become vehicles for exploitation.

Some people who say things like that perhaps do have such a complex, but they way my friend said it, it was meant to mean something like, "What's the fuss over? If Persians aren't offended by it, why should others be?" She would not have cared if Jake played the prince, or if an Iranian national played the prince, or if someone from Bollywood played the prince. It's all the same to her because she doesn't see this movie as defining her "race". She's Persian. If you want to call it Caucasian, you can. It's not Arab simply because it is not one of the Arab-speaking cultures nor did it originate is Saudi Arabia. It's simply a fact. If you want to say that Persians are not white, that doesn't bother her either. People have asked her about this many times. The point is, she thinks all this commotion over the casting of this movie (and 300, for that matter) by people who aren't Persian (and some people who are too) is ridiculous.

Ewww....why did they cast Gylenhaal? He doesn't even look Persian. Johnny Depp might have been more believable.
But hey, at least they didn't cast some blond chick as the female lead.

Why do they have fake British accents? Did the ancient Persians speak with British accents? If so why not hire British actors?

I too as surprised by this. Then I lightened up and realized this wasn't a historical documentary.

Production value looks better than any video game movie to date. Hopefully it will have a story to back it up and use the time effects correctly.

Okay, so the trailer makes it look not terrible, maybe even good, but I'm still keeping my expectations very low.

I can just imagine how little persuasion Jake G. need to agree to this:

Bruckheimer: Jake... 3 words... Prince. Of. Persia.

Gylenhaal: YES, PLEASE!!!

If it's Jerry Bruckheimer then it's going to be very, very bad.

And couldn't they find REAL Persian actors. You could link this to the 8 race_ist ads article.

Could be worse; could be Joel "I'm-a Kill the Batman Franchise" Schumaker.

Not necessarily. The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was a lot of fun. Most of his movies are a giant swing and a miss, but some have been good.

Name one Persian actor with the star power and name recognition of Mr. Gyllenhaal. Can't? That's because there are none. When you decide to invest well over a hundred million dollars of your own money in a film that needs to open in over 2000 screens, then you can cast an unknown Persian actor in the lead and see how fast you end up losing all of your money.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:44 PM on 11/03/2009

For one thing, why isn't there a major Persian, or even middle eastern or south asian star in hollywood? Because they never get roles like this. It's a twisted cycle and frankly it's still a very narrow minded industry catering to what seems to be a flat out stupid audience.

That said, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Alterton, the supporting cast could have easily been exchanged for something vaguely legitimate.

As for losing all your money, see Slumdog. If you've got a good movie you shouldn't worry about placing your faith in flashy effects and big names, they should be a bonus.
