What's Your Reaction?

In "Sarah From Alaska," two campaign reporters share the behind-the-scenes story of Sarah Palin's rise to national stardom and surprising resignation.

On the "Early Show" on CBS, authors Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe said Tuesday there was a "remarkable internal war" at the end of the campaign between Palin and McCain's teams when the VP candidate was told she could not deliver a concession speech. "Governor Palin tried to create some confusion" so that she would be able to speak, but she ultimately failed. "It really turned into an all-out civil war," Walshe said. On election night, Palin went back out onstage to take pictures with her family and McCain's staff was so terrified that she would give a speech after all that they turned out the lights on her.

According to a copy of the book obtained by Huffington Post, when senior McCain aide Carla Eudy heard the news, she immediately called campaign manager Steve Schmidt, who barked, "Take the set down. Unplug it."

The McCain staff didn't believe Palin's claim that she just wanted to take pictures with her family on stage - to one aide, it sounded like a "dubious cover story."

Even as the stage crew dimmed the lights, Palin and family stood there and waved at the dwindling crowd.

When she found out what was happening, an incensed Carla Eudy called [Palin advisor Jason] Recher to express her displeasure. "You never had control of her," she said, according to Recher. "Get control of her! Get her ass off stage!"

Conroy and Walshe got copies of Palin's undelivered concession speech (as well as her victory speech.) If [Obama] governs America with the skill and grace we have often seen in him, and the greatness of which he is capable, we're gonna be just fine," she planned to say. But she would also have proclaimed, "It would be a happier night if elections were a test of valor and merit alone."

CBS has an excerpt from the book on Palin's debate preparations. Here's a piece:

On the heels of the first round of Katie Couric interviews, her margin for error was nonexistent. Joe Lieberman, a veteran of a previous vice presidential debate, had been brought in to give Palin an idea of what to expect. The stifling air shortened everyone's patience, and tensions were running especially high between debate prep coordinator Mark Wallace and foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann. It was the note cards that had first led to the longstanding feud between Wallace and Scheunemann a couple of weeks earlier. One of the aides wanted Palin to memorize them, while the other thought it better for her to learn conceptually. The spat made it all the way up the chain to Steve Schmidt, who told Scheunemann in no uncertain terms that he did not have the time for bickering between staffers and that they needed to sort it out. But the two men were still fuming at one another, and negative vibes permeated the room along with the smell of greasy food.

UPDATE: Michael Hastings reports that Palin accused the two reporters who wrote "Sarah From Alaska" of "stalking" her. "The incident was a real wake up call for us -- they were clearly trying to intimidate us and made it abundantly clear that they wanted us out of Alaska," Walshe said.

Who is more inept, Conservatives or Liberals? Let's compare shall we.

Conservatives are tired of being taken advantage of by the Republican party and are doing something about it. Case in point: NY23. Shortly before the election in NY23, conservatives, including a smart, best selling author, with cover girls looks, cause a liberal to quit the race and without spending that much money come within 4 points of getting a reletively unknown third party candidate elected, thereby demonstrating their clout and effecting change within the Republican Party.

Meanwhile LIDS should be tired of DEMS taking advantage of them. Afterall, even though DEMS have the numbers, Guantanamo is still open, things are worst in Afghanistan, unemployment continues to rise, etc. etc. Yet Dems send Dumbo in Chief to NJ and VA, spend gazillions of dollars, and still get crushed. LIDS don't have the balls to do anything about it.

So Sarah views reporters questioning her as "stalking"... and intimidating reporters as supporting the First Amendment.

Yep... it's no wonder the teabaggers love her so.

What do Al Gore and McCain have in common?

They both showed bad judgment in their choice of VP.

Oops! This was in reply to Steph55 @ 1:58 pm

I think, you miss the point: she can be as wacky as she likes, it's what real live people think about her that is troubling. There are people who truly beleive she is a light in the darkness, an insightful and trustworthy beacon of dependability............that's what is dangerous.

How you get a country with enough wack-o's to feed her delusion is much more troubling to me.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:39 PM on 11/05/2009

Of course you are correct in "...what real live people think about her..."; however, that is part of the dysfunction at play here. She Is "out there". She seeks and attracts a certain segment of the population that is as "wacky" as she is. Together they complement each other and their needs are met. It is a symbiotic relationship. And yes, it is disturbing.

You're kidding right? You obviously haven't been paying attention. Did you see the opinion piece that was the front page story by Arianna for 2 days? HuffPo has been brutal (right or wrong) in their criticisms of Congress and the President.

To be fair, the Independent candidate was a joke, and the republican candidate dropped from the race in fury over the backstabbing she received.

I'm not sure if the democrats deserved to win that race, but the other parties certainly deserved to lose it.

There are plenty of articles on this site attacking congress and the President. So what? Palin chose to enter public life. She has no control over what people think of her, nor should she.

Isn't it ironic - McCain had a terrific relationship with the press. They loved him and he loved them. Before Palin joined the ticket, the "Straight Talk Express" was a favorite haunt of reporters from all the networks and major papers.

The straight talk express stopping running true once McCain sold what was left of his soul to win the nomination

Mixed feelings on this one. Even though Palin used her young daughter to "butter up the press" on the campaign bus, it was probably inappropriate for the pair to "chat up" Piper on her way home from school. Reporters need to learn to keep their distance from the children of candidates, even if the candidates make unwise decisions themselves to "put the kids out there".

Of course, Sarah's reaction was extreme. It always is. A simple, "Look, you guys might have met her on the bus, but please don't approach her again when she's not with her mother" would have sufficed.

Absolutely. If she wanted to protect Piper's privacy, that approach would have been best. But if what she really wanted to do is intimidate those reporters, it wouldn't have worked at all. So guess what it was she wanted to do?

Consider this additional excerpt from the book. It appears Palin likes to blur the lines on keeping her kids away from "strangers."
______________________________

"On our way back, we crossed paths with Piper Palin and two of her friends, who were evidently returning from school. We had known Piper as a frequent guest in the back of the plane during campaign flights between the cities. ... she seemed excited to chat briefly with us about her return to Alaska…

... Palin, of course, knew quite well who we were and that we were well acquainted with her daughter on a friendly basis. In fact, one close aide told us that Palin frequently used to encourage Piper to venture to the back of the campaign plane to butter up the press corps."
