Everyone loves the first family so much; we never tire of hearing about them or seeing them in photos or television. Keep it coming!

Thanks for the retrospect, HP. A lovely way to start the day.

All the photos are great, but I particularly love the ones that show them at their most unpretentious and real... like the rest of us. To wit:

* sitting on the floor at the basketball game. Because that's where they could sit to really see the game, and they didn't *mind*. No standing around waiting for someone to "fetch" a chair.

* Sasha's bare feet sticking out of the car at the Vatican. As a mom whose daughter has her shoes and socks off before we leave the school parking lot, I had to laugh!

* (not in this slideshow) Michelle skipping rope in her bare feet. Because that's how it's done!

I know they're way smarter and wealthier than my family will probably ever be. But even though they're in the White House, their lives look familiar to me!

What is extraordinary about the First Family photographs is not that they are so energetic or photogenic, nor notably graceful. It is that they actually look at each other. And when they do, they smile. Think about all the first family photos we seen over the decades. They are usually stilted, almost as if the occupants of the photograph were strangers to one another.
A couple of years ago, an acquaintance of mine, a boy (a young man?) was having difficulties with drugs. I nudged him, maybe even hectored him. I was worried because he was a decent boy. One day his mother came into our store who I knew was aware of the problem. He didn't see her but she saw him. And when her eyes lit on him, she smiled. I thought of all the mothers, fathers, husbands, wives and children who when they see each other don't smile. It made me sad. But for that boy a mother's smile turned out to be his salvation.
So forget about trophies handed out for merely belonging to a little league team or over-the-top compliments for setting the table. Just smile when you see your child. And at your husband or wife when they do nothing more than enter a room. Your children will learn that is how they are supposed to be treated.

Wow. This is a powerful comment. I really like what you said about them looking at each other and the simple act of smiling. My mama always smiled at me and always spoke kindly in general. So when I did something wrong, she didnt need to get the switch out or raise her voice, all she had to do was change her face or her tone and I knew to get it together. Why? Not because I feared a spanking, but because I wanted her to morph back to her regular, kind self. Some parents that I know look and speak so harshly with their child in general, that the child can't tell when they are pleased or really upset.

I like all of the photos, but I love the one with Sasha's feet in the frame. It was just so random and injected a dose of childhood silliness into the stuffy Vatican.

I agree with the other two posts...enough with the fluff...

get back to your core business of news analysis; that's what built your (gag me for the term) 'brand'.

Yo, what's going on here? Somebody on HP is on a manic First Family pictures/polls frenzy these days. This must be like the fourth or something in just two days.

I mean, I enjoy looking at the pics as much as the next guy, and never tire of them, but damm editors, take your chill pills!
