The New York Times:

Headlines in the satirical weekly newspaper The Onion tend to function both as punch line and setup, in that order. They are the heart of the paper, and not only the first thing anybody reads, but also, unlike headlines in real newspapers all over the world, the first things to be written.

What gets me about the Onion is how you would read an absolutely ridiculous headline that was so over the top farsical as to be outright impossible that you couldn't help but laugh. Then a few years later, you find out that not only was it not ridiculous but in fact prescient. E.G. "Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'" http://www.theonion.com/content/node/287844) or http://wonkette.com/403984/the-onion-predicted-joe-the-plumber-crap-in-19933)

Sure, they write lots of articles that have not turned out to be prescient, but now days, I read The Onion with dread wondering which stories will not be merely farce, but a prediction of what is to come.
