Manned up? So is the White House saying that Weiner is acting like a woman or a gay? And which one does our White House find worse?

On the day after a huge civil rights defeat for the gay and lesbian Americans, in a battle in which we were abandoned by President Obama and the Democratic National Committee, it's telling that the White House is using effeminate slurs to defame Democrats who question why the President didn't bother lifting a finger to help in a far too many races.

Wow, it took the WH about a 2weeks before the election to manned-up about supporting Thompson and they don't even mentioned his name in support of him at the press briefing. And Pres Obama manned-up by giving a shoutout only. His words were "BILLY IS IN THE HOUSE, OUR NEXT MAYOR." Does the WH think for one minute that the people of NYC cannot tell the difference between a full endorsement vs a tepid one the WH put out This only show that the WH must be living in a bubble over there. Nobody expected the President to be stumping for Thompson everyday.

The actions of people in the White House become more confusing every day. They go out of their way to obstruct and insult Dems that are trying to help them push through the agenda and change we voted for while bending over backwards to please the Blue Dogs and Republicans who have no intention of being part of the solution to the country's problems.

Too bad the White House couldn't "Man Up" and support Thompson a bit more aggressively, but they were afraid of the wrath of King Bloomberg.

Yeah, there's a good strategy. Keep treating your liberal base and it's standard bearers like sh#t.

But by all means, bend over backwards to make nice to Repuglicans and ConservaDems.

Obama needs to seriously re-consider some of his senior staff positions.

Anthony Weiner has more guts than anyone in this administration. This proves once more that this White House is not merely ambivalent about Progressivism, but is indeed the enemy of Progressivism.

A "White House Official", of which there are over 22 just aiding Michelle and many more for Barak.
They are a disgrace to be anonymous and bring Obama into the fight.
They impugn elected officials by the people, while their mere appointment to help the President and release snide and lowly comments is an affront to Democracy.
They will be the first ones to write a book denigrating the President once their services are no longer needed.

So when can we expect Obama to MANUP and deliever on his promises. His cowardly SILENCE on MAINE speaks volumes.

If I were gay, I'd be more offended by the author of this article than by the "unnamed white house source" that uttering the phrase 'Man Up'. This article is indirectly insinuating that is "Unmanly" to be gay, and therefor a homosexual man cannot 'man up'. I'm sure that's not the case, and most gay men consider themselves to be strong men capable of rising to any occasion... aka.... capable of 'Manning Up'.

'Man up' means have some heart, some courage, some guts. I assume that all those are qualities you'd have to have in order to be an openly gay man in this America. Of course I could be wrong.

CB&P (above)

I don't think you're wrong.

And there is enough sick stuff and people around spreading dis-ease and ill-will.

We don't need more ner-do-wells stirring up false negativity when there is so much of the real thing to contend with already.

Well I hope the White house sees Weiner "Man up" and run against Obama in 2012. Given the choice between the two Weiner would certainly get my vote. But my real heart's desire is that Kucinich becomes our next president. There are maybe a handful of honest for the people men/women left standing in politics. How I hope finally one of them becomes our next president.

Relax and take a deep breath. This is not a homophobic slur. Football players have been saying this term to other players on their team, and I have heard my peers say it to each other. In other words, the term means toughen up. It means be brave because you will be fighting a tough battle, and you will have to fight like your life will depend on the outcome.

I've got to weigh in with water57:

While not scientific nor definitive, I've thought about every context in which I heard this term used and in no instance was there any "gay" insult or inuendo intended or even remotely involved.

People use this phrase to (express frustration) and say: "C'mon, step up to the plate!" - "Live up to your potential" - "What are you waiting for" - "JUST DO IT!" and above all:

STAND UP AND FIGHT!""

The term "manning up" is probably somewhat chauvinistic (in the pre-feminist sense) like "Hey, be a man!" (don't be a coward!) which in curent use applies equally to all genders and all sexual orientations (unless you are being hyper-sensitively PC.)

I think most of us could come up with a long list of "public servants" and others we'd like do say this to or moreover JUST SEE THEM DO IT! Hmmm, off the top of my head: Harry Reid, all of the Blue Dogs and most of the rest of them in both parties.

Weiner is one of the few who has already "manned up" - both courageously and consistently.

Some 1300+ people work at the White House.

Just who was this "Official" and how Senior?

They don't call DC the Biggest Rumor Mill in the World for nothing.

So manned up is a diss to the gay community? People are too sensitive if you take that as a diss. Calm down.

The WH probably is referring to the fact that Weiner was shooting his mouth off for months dropping broad hints that he was going to challenge Bloomberg, but when it came time he refused to run.

Maybe the White House should have "manned up" and offered a little more support to Thompson. We'd be looking at a different result today.

This isn't really about Thompson. The leader of the Democratic Party should support Democratic candidates. Period.

If that's something you can't commit to, that's fine. You don't have to run from the Democratic ticket. You can run as an independent. But, you can't have it both ways: you can't appropriate the full advantages of the Democratic machinery when it's your turn to run, and ignore your obligations later.
