Sam Kass, White House Chef, Works To Fight Child Obesity

Sam Kass and President Obama go way back. Kass cooked for Obama for two years before he was elected president and has been heavily involved in tending to the White House garden.

He's also using his skills and influence to promote good nutrition for children and is active in wanting to prevent child obesity.

In an interview with The New York Times, Kass discussed how he believes many of the current challenges facing America can be traced to the food we eat.

"It's not a big step to think about a) What am I doing? How is that affecting this problem? How am I helping?...Cooking for people's pleasure is obviously a nice thing to do," he said, "but the No. 1 reason we eat is to nourish ourselves and take care of ourselves.

Kass is reportedly very close to First Lady Michelle Obama and has been instrumental in bringing healthy food to the White House kitchen and preparing wholesome meals for children who come through to visit.
