Paralyzed

As part of its Bearing Witness 2.0 project, the Huffington Post is rounding up a few of the best local stories of the day.

In southern Texas, Estela Garza is donating her home to a paralyzed man who has been living in a storage shed, reports Jordan Williams of KRGV. She considered sell the house, she explained, which was her father's, but said she had the realization that "maybe God doesn't want me to sell it; maybe he wants us to give it to somebody that is in need."

The recipient, Woodrow Reed, lost his mobile home due to foreclosure, and last month the only money he had -- donations intended to help him get a new place to live -- were stolen out of the back of his caretaker's car. He is still recovering from a broken leg at a nearby hospital, but Garza is planning to have the house ready for him when he gets out.

Jeff and Jenette Lomax, of Victorville, Calif. won a court case against a loan modification company that scammed them out of $1,000, reports Patrick Thatcher of the local Daily Press. The couple -- the first in the nation to get legal support with the Center for Litigation and Consumer Real Estate Education -- claimed the Certified Financial Protection Group accepted their money for a loan modification, even though the organization knew their house had already been foreclosed. After taking their money, the CFPG did not assist the Lomax couple in any way. A civil court ruled in their favor, and awarded them more than $7,000, three times the amount they were seeking.

A food bank in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., started to turn patrons away because of decreased funding and heightened demand this week, reports Meagan O'Halloran of NBC affiliate WJHG. The Sharing and Caring food pantry is looking for donations from the public, and had to cut some services for the first time ever. "Sharing and Caring has been here forever," said Theresa Red, who is homeless and depends on the organization. "They don't have any money," she explained, "they're almost homeless like we are!"

The public has stepped up, and since Monday donations have been pouring in. The response, including one man's pledge to donate a $1,000 check, is "very encouraging," said one volunteer, and "somewhat humbling."

Dave Dudley saw his lay-off as an opportunity to live out an old dream and hit the highway -- permanently. The former software VP and his wife Joleen gathered up their three kids, hitched a 41-foot trailer onto the back of their truck, and have spent the last year on the road, driving around the nation and turning their lives a never-ending road trip, reports the Today show's Michael Inbar. The kids go to school online, and the family claimed it has gotten a lot closer. They have also saved money: "Just taking care of the house, with the mortgage and the insurance and the utility bill and all that, we were probably looking at around $3,000 a month," said Dudley. "Now we're looking at around $300 a month for the same thing."

The Dudleys have a website documenting their travels, and are part of a small trend of families saving money by going on permanent vacation.

Due to Obama's inability to create an effective jobs program the only beneficiaries of this recovery is Wall Street- the same it's been since the 80's. FDP knew how to make work, but Obama doesn;t or chooses not to.

good articles; http://financeopinionss.blogspot.com
because of this he may lose in 2012.

Cdangers you do not know what your talking about, I started living full time in a RV in 2002, and can attest to its more economical than a traditional house, and anyone who actual lives in a RV knows your full of ignorance, I will avoid using the profantiy you deserve! One can rent a RV space from anywhere as low as $125 a month to as high as $1500 depending on locations, as to electricity its either metered or included in the monthly RV space lot rent, and water, sewage are all included in RV space rents as a standard! Some RV parks are so competitive they offer free cable, free wifi to induce folks to live full time or stay temporarily! And RV tags & registration fee's go down annually as the vehicle is lowered in value! Much like a non highway mobile home, it depreciates! One cannot depreciate a house till it reaches 44 years of age! Many retiree's opt for the RV life style since its well known to be more economical than a traditional house! Your likely living in one of those upside down mortgages, two paychecks away from homelessness and angry you cannot do as this article states.

She must be a Republican. There wasn't a mandate for her to giveup her house.

I'm calling BS on the last part of this article. "Just taking care of the house, with the mortgage and the insurance and the utility bill and all that, we were probably looking at around $3,000 a month," said Dudley. "Now we're looking at around $300 a month for the same thing." There is no way they are hauling around a 41 foot trailer with a large truck for only 300 bucks a month. The gas alone would be that much. +water+hydro+insurance+sanitation disposal+ repairs++++.

Loved reading about the lady who donated her home to a man in need. God bless you, Estrela.

There are so many people in need now. Why isn't HUD building low-income housing or getting control of existing properties to help people?

Excellent question. Instead repossessed houses are being bought up for pennies on the dollar, often by international buyers.

Nice gesture but .. a house costs money to maintain. Where will he get money for utilities, taxes, repairs etc ...

I see problems within a year, and this lady will feel as if she did it all for nothing.

The government provides a gilded safety net for Wall Street while those in dire need depend on the kindness of strangers.

How did things get so lopsided?

I'm a fairly cynical person, and yet every time I'm about to descend into complete misanthropy and cynicism, I hear a story about a person donating a house to someone in need, and I'm forced to realize that there are good people out there. Not as many as I would like, but they're out there.

Also, with regards to the family that's traveling everywhere - I know that sounds great, but I'm concerned about the kids. Kids need to have friends to play with and hang out with, and while I certainly favor family members getting to know each other well, kids do need some "friend time" that doesn't involved mom and dad.

If they're anything like my kids, they make friends everywhere they go and probably keep in touch with their "home" friends through email. I wouldn't worry too much. My kids love to travel. We spent a month just traveling through Europe and they keep asking when can we do it for a year.

What a wonderful story. I know of 3 separate incidences, involving people that I know personally, of money being stolen from "caretakers". One case was never solved, in the other two cases, it turned out the caretaker was the thief. I wish this man well, and I am moved by the generous house donor. Truly a kind, generous soul.

Maybe this kind and generous woman from Texas will shame Dubya into doing something for the poor. I doubt it though.
