Cry Translator

The Cry Translator iPhone app will tell you why your baby is crying -- and how to fix it -- in ten seconds flat, the sellers claim.

Wired explains,

The Cry Translator listens to a whining child and analyzes the pitch, volume, tone and inflection of his nerve-jangling noise. Ten seconds later, it provides you with one of five "translations": hungry, sleepy, stressed, annoyed or bored.

The seller, Biloop Technologic, says that tests have shown the app to be accurate 96% of the time.

The app is reportedly the result of six years of research by a team in Spain, who claim that crying has no bounds, and no borders:

There are five distinct cries that have common frequency patterns, regardless of culture or language.

The app, which costs $29.99, is on sale for $9.99 through November 11, 2009.

What do you think? Love it or leave it? Would you wait ten seconds before calming your child -- and trust an app over instinct to decide why your baby is upset?

Nothing replaces an attentive parent listening to their baby. The Why Cry translator and now iPhone App is based on general crying intensity and does not offer the specific identifiers provided by the proven Dunstan Baby Language, which is based on universal infant reflexes. Just 3 years after its release, DBL is used by progressive infant care professionals, midwives, doctors and so far over 500,000 new parents the world over. Oprah ran with this on November 2006.

In the modern world, people can become parent who have never had significant prior experience. And, they may be isolated from their own parients--totally on their own.

After a few days of taking care of a baby anyone could probably tell you if their were hungary or tired or needed holding or did not feel good.

If a baby does not feel good, that is a tough one: Is their tummy bothering, something else? When should I call the doctor? What should I report to the doctor?

My first son, cried alot, he often had diarrehia--though we did not know if that was atypical. Strangly, sometimes it came out fizzy like soda.
We told our doctors, but they did not seem to register it.

After having our second son, we realized that our first was pretty uncomfortable, collicky in comparison. I think now he was lactose intolerant.

Having some some grand parents or friends around with experience would haved helped a lot. What parents really need is regular assistance from experienced parients who can just see what is going on and help out.

If your baby is crying, it's because of one or all of four things. I'm hungry, I need changed, I need held or I don't feel good. That's it. If you need an app to know what to do, then you don't need to be a parent.

If you need help 'translating' your babies cries, then maybe you should spend more time with your baby and less time with your iPhone.

Already done on the Simpsons:

Homer's half-brother (played by Danny DeVito) invents a machine that translates baby gibberish into adult speech.

Maggie (translated): I have soiled myself. How embarrassing.

They can have all the legal mumbo jumbo in the startup program they want. It won't stop lawsuits from coming down fast and hard.

hmm.. a definate improvement over there offensive "Shake the Baby" iPhone application from a few months ago. I have a 6 month old and I don't need an iPhone to tell me whats going on when he cries.
