"The Sweetest Thing" with Thomas Jane and Cameron Diaz: "Isn't that just the 'sweetest thing'?" Oh---it's just awful and stands out like a sore thumb.

This has long been a pet peeve of mine, especially when the film's title was not something that a normal person would say. If the movie is named after a proper noun (Titanic, Pearl Harbor, Shrek), then you can't avoid it. But saying the title of the movie in the middle of a scene almost always takes you out of the movie for a moment. James Bond films are the worst offenders, as they always find a way to work in such off-the-cuff phrases such as 'tomorrow never dies' or 'die another day'. Ironically, while the word 'scream' is uttered only once in the first Scream, the original title 'scary movie' was uttered countless times. Near catastrophe was avoided. Anyway, I love that someone finally rounded a bunch of these up into one video.

With regard to the point you make about movie titles that are proper nouns (or even just common nouns), many of the movies that are shown in this montage are examples of that situation. While I share your negative critical opinion of movies that heavy-handedly incorporate their titles into the dialogue, this video didn't really do much for me since so many of them had titles that were just nouns or names.

Even though they may mention the title of the film in the dialogue, the working film title may have been something completely different.

It should be noted that films generally start out with a working production title. Sometimes a title of a film has the same name as another film of lesser known statues. On film credits there is a section called title insurance or title clearance. This is to make sure that no other title of a film is in existence and if it is, they pay for the use. Proper names like Titanic are different because it's a historical reference and the other exceptions are remakes. Mel Gibson agreed to rename his Jesus biopic "The Passion of the Christ" because Miramax had the right to make a movie based on the Jeanette Winterson novel "The Passion." Fox and Paramount both announced major film projects called "Avatar" on the morning of January 8, 2007, the MPAA guidelines helped resolve their issues (Fox's James Cameron film kept the name; Paramount's is now called "The Last Airbender"). And so it goes.

The magazine Film Threat had a club they promoted called the Movie Nighters where you would go to the movies with a group of friends and when the title of the film was spoken in the dialogue, everyone would stand up and give a golf clap. I still stand and golf clap to this day.

my pet peeve is the phone number 555-xxxx that is used in films. Talk about snapping you right back into their fake reality. Why do they have to make announcing the number

I always wondered about that too, then someone said that the 555- prefix is the only number they could use without duplicating someone's real phone number, so that if someone tried to dial it, would not actually ring in someone's house. Don't know how true that is.

It is true after a few real numbers went out there and gave people grief. So, rather than getting sued, the 555 prefix was established to counteract the blind phone calls. And if anyone still remember the song by Tommy Tutone that had the phone number 8675309 was an active number and the person who owned it, sold it. Pop songs have been notorious for using real phone numbers.

I read about this crazy book that has almost all the words from movie titles, all written within it. It's called a dictionary. Far out, right? I mean, it's like people actually do weird things like use words more than once, or the things that a word describes are so specifica that only one word works for them.

SpaghettyIrish and kev1000 seem to have compiled the list of movies in which it would be the dumbest thing NOT to mention the title of the movie. Honestly, Terminator? How can you not mention Terminator in the movie about the terminating robot? Alien? Same thing. Batman, Superman? I'm sorry, are you completely braindead to expect these movies to exist without mentioning those words?

For crying out loud...

How dare they plagiarize their own movie, or worse, the dictionary?

I loved when Demi Moore says: "Boy, I'd like to get plowed by A Few Good Men."

From now on, all movie titles should be completely unrelated to anything going on in the movie.

Hey, they left out Titanic.

Of course, they never mention the name Titanic in that movie. They usually just call it "large boat" or "Tootsie".

So they left out Tootsie, is what I'm saying.

The most head-slapping moment was when Elrond uttered "The Fellowship of the Ring." In the next movie, when Saruman mentioned the union of "The Two Towers" I dang near fell out of my chair. Fortunately, they didn't quite manage to piece together "Return of the King" into the third, so at least I'm still breathing.

Actually, they did. Gandalf speaks this line to Denethor at the end of their meeting in Minas Tirith:

"Authority is not given to you to deny the return of the King, steward."

I'm OK with it in The Lord of the Rings because it sort of fit into the dialog and the theme of it. It's something that would be said, even if it wasn't in the title - at least IMO. I guess it depends on how you look at it.

I agree. I'm okay with using the movie title in the dialogue if it fits or is natural. What I hate are the cringe-worthy melodramatic uses of the title. As for Lord of the Rings...Elrond's use of "Fellowship of the Ring" was such a cringe-worthy melodramatic moment. However, the speaking of the titles in the other two movies were more natural and so I don't have a problem with that--in fact, those movies had much, much worse problems than speaking the title....but that's another argument.
