Nine Arrested Protesting Lieberman's Healthcare Stance

Health Care Arrest

Nine protesters were arrested Thursday in a demonstration at the office of Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) to demand that he pledge to stop accepting from the health insurance industry.

Lieberman, who last week said he would join a GOP filibuster of any health care bill with a government-run public option, has accepted about $1.5 million from health professionals and insurance agencies since 2003, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Twenty protesters, including four students from the University of Connecticut, marched into the senator's office in the morning and demanded to speak with him. Aides denied their request, offering constituents a closed-door meeting with two legislative aides, which was rejected. Nine protesters then staged a sit-in, saying they would not leave the office until they could have a discussion with the senator in person.

Lieberman did not arrive, though he was in the building, preparing to chair a Homeland Security Committee hearing on business formation and financial crime.

"We're waiting to see if the senator for Aetna is ready to be the senator for the people," explained one protester, Kai, who wouldn't give his last name. Aetna has spent over two million dollars on lobbying in 2009, and has donated $65,000 to Lieberman's campaign committee.

Within 10 minutes of the protesters' arrival, Capitol police were on the scene. They dragged away nine protesters, including two of Lieberman's Connecticut constituents, as Senate staffers watched from the lobby and office hallways.

After the arrests, five of the remaining protesters continued on to Lieberman's committee hearing, which was already underway. They stood in the back of the chamber and quietly held up signs reading "Patients Not Profits" and "Insurance $$$ Makes Me Sick."

"It's ironic Lieberman is chairing this meeting on corporate crimes," said Medea Benjamin, who characterized the practice of accepting campaign donations from health insurance companies as criminal.

The demonstration was organized by the Mobilization for Health Care for All, which has been staging rallies and sit-ins in front of insurance companies since September. So far, 150 people have been arrested, and the organization promises to continue its actions.

The senator's office issued a brief statement: "The demonstrators insisted on disrupting office operations after they rejected repeated offers for meetings with both the Senator's Chief of Staff and Legislative Director to discuss their concerns. After rejecting these meeting offers, refusing to heed warnings from the Capitol Hill police and continuing the disruption, some of the demonstrators were removed by the police."

My anger meter climbs to all time highs when I see a pic of Lieberman. Congratulations to Mobilization For Health Care For All and all the protestors for a job well done. I know Democrats don't want to emulate Republican purification but this guy takes it to the limits. He caucuses with Democrats and is allowed by them to chair the Homeland Security committee even after campaigning for McCain and supporting a threatened filibuster against health care legislation. He loves war. Obviously he's just another Independent too embarressed to call himself a Republican.

Merrill Backs Bush

Bush derives much of his campaign donations from executives at publicly traded companies, with employees at Merrill Lynch & Co., UBS AG and MBNA Corp. among those making up 13 of his top 20 donors last year, contributing $2.9 million.

Six of the top 20 donors to Senator John Kerry, who has clinched the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, were employees of listed companies, and they gave $275,000 since he began campaigning in January 2003, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Agreed!!!! Why don't more Americans demand reform? My son says the same thing almost every day as he watches this healthcare (and other) debates unfold - and he is 12 years old!

We need a lot more of these peaceful demonstrations....we need to make the lives of our unhearing politicians miserable until they do listen to us.

Applause. Peaceful actions against a cynical politician, bought by the corporations, who is chairing exactly the committees that he should not chair for his own conflicts of interest.

That's what we need on the other side. A little passion and sacrifice for what is correct.

I wish I was there.
Where do they post rally info?

ever heard of "little man syndrome"? the influx of big bucks is bolstering his shriveled little-man ego. but they will only do so until we get our public option. after that they will have to use their money to play fair and cover pre-existing conditions and not put a cap on treatments. enjoy it little man joe cause its a limited time influx!

Does anyone else see the irony of a "bought & paid for" elected official chairing the committee on financial crime? How is anything going to change in this country if we continue to pay the fox to watch the chickens?

As a native of Connecticut, and an alumni of UCONN, I am proud of these protestors So sorry they were arrested and taken away, but so were many of Martin Luther King jr.'s followers, but, in the end they were successful. Wish I could have been part of these young people's protest.
12:08 AM on 11/08/2009
NO!!!! I totally disagree!! We all know what this protest was about!!! Just look at the signs (the holocaust sign, would have freaked me out enough to leave the scene...clue: these people are sick, and are not out here about Health Care) I can not believe how crazy people are over Health Care! Please do your homework, and remember when blacks marched, it was for our rights as Black Americans and not for the crazies upset over President Obamas win! The Tea Baggers and other protesters are out here because of reasons that are way beyond Health Care! Like someone said earlier, if you asked these protesters what the bill contained, many could not tell you one line of the bill! Please keep in mind Health Care has been on the table for years and never got this much attention....please wonder why(???) During The Civil Rights movement, the Blacks were on one sheet of music! We all wanted the same thing and to think someone would compare this to The Protest during Martin L. King is appauling!! I am however thankful for how the Democrats are so composed during this time....what Martin L. King was so hard core about!!
