Mail Online:

Children are being handed Nintendo Wiis to play on at school if they can't be bothered to turn up for traditional PE.

Youngsters who deliberately leave their football or rugby kit at home to dodge the games lessons are being allowed to play with the consoles instead.

Using electronics in this method allows fro competitive activity with no direct physical contant and risk of injury. It really does make sence, as it allows those who are as a physically capable to get started.

So I am split on this... I think it is great this school is getting kids who are not active, well moving. I feel that this wont last though. Physically their bodies will get use to it and then they will stop improving. That is a major problem. Plus they are lossing things like the competitive edge of pe and possibly how to be healthy outside of school. I read this and heard what the teacher was reporting as results but I need real data; have the students improved? have the students lost any weight? what do they think? what do the parents think? I just feel like this could be a good way reward students... but some of these students are getting to play videogames because they refuse to participate in pe. If they don't wear the right pe clothes... do what most high school locker rooms do, give out loaners and grade them down for not being prepared. yet the wii is getting them active when they weren't before. I am still on the fence.

I agree too. I'm split. The one thing I thing the Wii takes away is the social activity and team work that real sports participation brings.

Like paying girls college money for not getting "knocked up" (gee, don't boys count or are they like 100% evil or something?), this "Wiiplacement for Exercise"(tm) gimmick is a ridiculous situation.

The Wii has a time and place. In lieu of proper PhyEd class is not one of them, however!

What happened to disciplining children? Or do teachers and principals get into trouble if they try to do what the parents are unable (or, worse, unwilling) to do? The television is hardly a nanny... nor is the Wii, even if they came out with a game that let you punch something (or someone) and then get told what's socially acceptable or not...

Heck, even in colleges or computer training courses, some instructors can't be bothered to tell the whispering jerks in the back to "zip the lip" while (s)he talks... What, don't these instructors have any respect for themselves? It's downright rude to chatter. It's disrespectful toward everybody, and it's the most disrespectful toward the instructor. And if they don't care, what are they doing in the job? Oh, that's right, society doesn't care about quality... just what's "good enough"... what goes around comes around, hence our economy circa 2007...

If nothing else, it's only $1650 per course or semester, so why would people whisper about vapid gossip during class, unless it's not their money they will be expecting a ROI on after the course ends/graduation/whatever?
