planetgreen.discovery.com:

About one quarter of the oil consumed in this country is used for industrial purposes. Plastic production is the most obvious example, as awareness grows of the harm plastic does to the earth and people shun the material when they can.

But oil has permeated more of our lives than most people realize. Here, the most surprising places you'll find oil, in some form, as a key ingredient:

everything that uses oil products can instead used BioOil from the waste organics. We will still need the refineries, but they will use bioOil as the input instead of fossil oil. BioChar is the easiest and perhaps the best. see my profile.

Most of this is true. However...

Asphalt isn't so bad for environment, as it is the most recycled substance on earth, and very little of it winds up in the landfills. See my comment below for more details --v

Also, nitrogen fertilizer isn't made from liquid oil, it's almost always made using natural gas, and the product itself doesn't contain any hydrocarbons. The natural gas is used to product hydrogen gas using the steam reformation and water gas shift reactions, and the hydrogen gas is reacted with atmospheric nitrogen gas using the Haber-Bosch process to produce ammonia. From there, fertilizers based on ammonium nitrate or urea can be produced.

This method is used because it is the cost-effective way to produce hydrogen gas for the time being. The dreams of water electrolysis promoted by "hydrogen economy" advocates (e.g. MyTake) are just that (dreams). The next-best way to produce hydrogen gas is from the pyrolysis of organic waste in the absence of oxygen, producing hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide.

Oh, come now. When you cook a barrel of oil, just where do you think all that by-product chemicals have to go?

When Rockefeller started his Standard Oil monopoly on oil refining and before they cars and trucks, they were pouring gasoline into rivers and setting it aflame just to get rid of it.

The oil refined by-products a forced into all base industries to provide profits to the chemical divisions of the oil corporations.

But, had Tesla had his way, before being put out of business by the Rockefeller/Morgan/Westinghouse syndicate, and provided us a method of having our own private source of free electricity, you would not have been able to write this article as there would be no oil cartels.

And if you released the Hydrogen and Hemp economies, you could dramatically reduce the massive chemical pollution of present day society.

Dunno, but one of the "shocking" petroleum-derived products listed in the article is asphalt.

Come on, who didn't know that asphalt and pavement sealers are made from oil?

I'm shocked.

However, the most recycled substance on earth is NOT aluminum, plastic, or glass.

The most widely recycled substance is... ASPHALT!!

Very little asphalt winds up in landfills. The vast majority is remelted at relatively low temperature, remixed, and reused.

The petroleum-based bitumen binder could be replaced with recycled LDPE or other low molecular-weight thermoplastic -- and I advocate such technologies -- but asphalt isn't the worst thing in the world.

Concrete is FAR worse for the environment while containing no petroleum at all.

As kids, we used to use roofing tar as chewing gum. It was what we had.

It bothers me that most lotions and cosmetics have petroleum as a base (mineral oil, etc.). Is that good stuff for one's skin? I've even seen where some dermatologists recommend using vaseline as a nighttime moisturizer. How can that be good?

Petroleum based cosmetics haven't been *proven* to be carcinogenic, the worst dirt I could dig up on them is that they're photo toxic (can make you sunburn easier/faster). There are claims they clog pores, and don't really moisturize, making your skin feel like it needs more moisture, ergo more petroleum based cosmetics. I avoid them like the plague and my skin feels much better for it.

A relative of mine worked at an oil company, that doesn't exist any more, in the 60s.

He tried to get them to realise it was a bad idea to make disposable items out of oil.

Of course noone paid attention cuz he had wrked his way up from a pipefitter and didnt have a college egemacation.

Sure it's cheap now, he said, but what if oil goes to $10 a gallon?

Oh, it'll NEVER got to ten dollars a gallon! was their response.
