The Sirens of Titan, Kurt Vonnegut

Chris Kepner:
There are several of Vonnegut's novels that deserve to stand the test of time, and this is one of them. Most people immediately think of Slaughterhouse Five, but there is something very special about this earlier work. The deep caves of Mercury, for example—whose walls give off a phosphorescent, jonquil-yellow light that turns to aquamarine when it passes through the kite-shaped creatures who live there and are nourished by the vibrations of the "song" the planet sings—is one of the most beautiful and memorable settings I've ever read about. This is also perhaps the most spiritually optimistic of Vonnegut's works.

At the risk of being labeled a SPAMMER:

While it's not QUITE the Tyler Perry/Oprah "Precious" treatment of Sapphire's "Push" novel, it's a FREE DOWNLOAD, and a rare look of a Black MALE's perspective of life in Amerikkka TODAY [even though I use 1968 as the backdrop].

For all you READERS looking for something entirely out of the box, give it a read...if you ain't hooked after 50 pages so be it.

Better than the last list, in my opinion. The Shipping News is a great #1 out of this group. I think Kavalier and Clay belongs at #2, though, with Dune at #3. My suspicion is that Dawkins is getting votes just for being Dawkins because as far as books go, The Blind Watchmaker doesn't belong in the company of most of the ones on this list... neither does The Curious Case of the Dog in the Night-Time, for that matter, which is more or less a creative writing experiment in narrative voice; once the novelty of that wears off, there's not much to sink your teeth into. As for what's missing, last month I suggested Gravity's Rainbow, and I'm nominating it again, but this list is also sorely lacking in tried and true timeless classics, so might I suggest Huck Finn and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?

LOLITA, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul, Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.

For those of you into American history, check out James Flexner's biography on George Washington. It is absolutely spectacular!

Here's his 4-volume biography listed in order by title:

"George Washington, the Forge of Experience (1732-1775)"
"George Washington in the American Revolution (1775-1783)"
"George Washington and the New Nation (1783-1793)"
"George Washington, Anguish and Farewell (1793-1799)"
