Yankees On Letterman (VIDEO): Jeter, Posada, Pettitte Talk World Series, Minka Kelly On The Late Show

What's Your Reaction?

After beating the Phillies in the World Series, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, and Derek Jeter faced another challenge last night: dealing with David Letterman.

Letterman joked with the Yankees players about their careers and personal lives. At one point the talk show host told the audience that during the three years Pettitte left the Yankees to play for the Houston Astros he was actually "run[ning] a dairy queen."

Letterman also pressed Jeter on his rumored engagement to actress Minka Kelly, which the Yankee slugger denied.

World Series MVP Hideki Matsui also made a guest appearance.

I'm not going to hate on the Yankees. Yes, they have the highest payroll; but if you want to make that argument to diminish them - are Pirates, Royals, and Marlins are the only teams that deserve to win? My Phils had a higher payroll than the Marlins - did they "buy" a division title? It comes down to this: the players have to perform on the field (with their fans' support - and Phillies fans are the best in baseball). The Yankees outplayed the Phils and were the better team this year.
So congratulations to the Yankees and their fans. This was your year, just as last year was ours. Next year... we'll see.

Your team had a higher payroll and it WON the National League. Why? It could afford to pay better players! So indeed you could say your team "bought" a title by signing and paying better players. My team across the state (the Pirates) does not have nearly the payroll of the Phillies or Yankees and has lost for 17 straight seasons in the most beautiful ballpark in baseball. Consider the NFL, which has a fairer salary cap system. Therefore, a football team from a smaller town like Pittsburgh can produce six Superbowl-winning teams like the Steelers. If baseball continues without a salary cap, the only baseball fans left will be in New York, Philly and Los Angeles. If that's what baseball wants, fewer kids will want to play games or attend them. Baseball had better get smart or continue its slow freefall into sports oblivion.

Do the Pirates EVER keep talent? Do they spend money in keeping with income or does the owner horde profit? Guess which teams had the highest profit margin this year--the Nats and Marlins. Guess which had the lowest--the Yankees. The Steinbrenners have been putting winning ahead of profits. I wonder where the Pirate ownership puts his luxury tax money. Maybe if there was a minimum payroll or a percentage of revenue that had to go into talent on the field, the Pirates would have better players.

Jimmy Rollins was on Leno - Personally an invite to Mr. Creepy the cheater isn't such a big deal.

Besides money can buy happiness. We all should throw a few spit balls to get to the World Series.

The Angel's should be protesting the win... after all the Yankee's knew who they would play in the world series even before they eliminated the A's.

How come he didn't have the stars of the Phillies on there last year? Or stars of the Braves and Marlins and Diamondbacks and Royals and Cardinals and Blue Jays and other teams that have won the Series? Sounds like some bigtime bias. But fitting that they have these three on the show, the most juiced lineup in baseball history, shades of the 1919 Sox.

It isn't about the CCs, the AJs, the Marks, the Alexes, the Johnnys, or the Hidekis. It is about the Benjamins. Baseball is a beautiful game, but the major league variety is played on such an unbelievably unlevel field that this isn't nearly the accomplishment it would be if they had built the team that won it all rather than buying it.

If you watched the Yankees post season games, you should have noticed that the players who made the most contributions were the lower paid players. Pettitte with his 5 million a year and Chamberlain with his $430,000 did better in most games that the 16 million a year Burnett. A-Rod didn't clinch the series for them, Matsui did and he isn't even in the top 4 highest paid DH. If you look at the top 10 highest paid baseball players of 2009, only 4 of them are from the Yankees. The Yankee have the money to pay for players because they have had a good team for decades. This isn't college baseball, it is pro and the more money you make as a club, the better your team will be and there still has to be team unity. The best individual line up doesn't necessarily make the best team. The Yankees games weren't complete shut outs. They played hard for their win.

IN CASE YOU DON'T REMEMBER RODRIQUEZ BROKE THE RECORD FOR RBI'S IN THE PLAYOFFS. 18 AS A MATTER OF FACT, DO YOU THINK THE YANKEES WOULD BE IN THE WORLD SERIES WITHOUT THAT ? I THINK NOT !!

Without A-Rod the Yankees would never made it into the series.
Check the playoff stats.

And yet the 2 teams with the highest profit margin were the Nats and Marlins. meaning they didn't invest in their player personnel and pocketed luxury tax monies. The team with the lowest profitability? The Yankees. They pay the tax AND invest in their players. The Steinbrenner family like winning more than money. Go figure.

Its easy to dismiss their achievement given the payroll, but they still had to get it done, and the pressure to not lose must have been much greater than the pressure to win. Posada just seemed relieved, as opposed to elated. That is the difference between a dark horse like the Rockies or Rays who have fans from everywhere pulling for a Cinderella, and corporate teams like the Yankees or Dodgers that are "supposed" to win. Baseball is unique in it's lack of parity, and this is part of the old-timey appeal I guess. Myself, I like AAA baseball.

Given their payroll they should win at least once in every 3 years.

All they had to do was pay a couple hudred million in the off season to sign the two highest dollar starting pitcher and highest priced field player free agents. What an accomplkishment. They must be so proud that they were finally able to buy another ring!

And I bet you just love the fact that the owner of your fav baseball team puts $$$$$$$$$$$ in his pockets instead of investing in a winning team.

I'm a Phillies fan and obviously disappointed they didn't win, but I don't know why anyone would diss Derek Jeter. He's a genuinely good guy and a fabulous player and I'd love to have him on our team. He's such a gentleman and so good at what he does off and on the field, I can't dislike him. Even if he played for the Mets I'd still find it hard to hate him. I might like him less, but I still wouldn't hate the guy. One thing for sure - Yankees fans make it easy to root for ABBNY. The good thing is - all glory is fleeting, so enjoy your parade today. You won't be seeing another any time soon.

Really, you mean like when we went to the series 4 times in the last 9 years and won 2??? Or that we won 5 in the last 13 years??? Really??? You mean like how the Phillies have won TWICE in the 106 years of the World Series??? The Phillies are good for one every 53 years. The Yankees on the other hand are good for one every 3.92 years. So I don't think you will be seeing one any time soon.

The Yankees show that pay and performance works more often than not. Great management who are able to and then go the extra mile to be the best shows. The Yankees could have spent a lot less money on a new Stadium but they did not because they believe in having the best product possible. There is no question that the Yankees spend the money necessary and the fact that some other teams cannot or will not is their problem.

at least the Steinbrenners reinvest in their team. and the Yankees wind up paying a luxury tax as well - your team's owners probably just pockets that $$$$$ instead of trying to put a winner on the field.

boo-hoo
