"I Object": Tom Price Tries To Shut Down Democratic Congresswomen (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

On Saturday morning, a group of House Republicans -- led by Rep. Tom Price (R-Georgia) -- attempted to stop the Democratic Women's Caucus from making their arguments about how the health bill would benefit women by screaming over them.

Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.) only had time to say "Mr. Speaker, I ask unanimous consent to--," before Price shouted "I object." The presiding chair, Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) made gestures to maintain control, declaring that "the request is not yet before the House" and that Price was "out of order," to little effect. Capps attempted to go on, but Price continued shouting "I object! I object! I object!"

The same shouting tactics were used on Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio), who asked angrily, "Do I not have the right to be able to continue my sentence without objections that are trying to censor my remarks here on the floor that I have a right to make as a member of this House?"

Dingell did not have to put up with this. He should have had the Seargant-At-Arms remove price.

Dr. Price is definitely objectionable.

This uncommonly immature and belligerent attitude on the part of Republicans is shameful and the fact that there are those on this site who try to justify this behavior shows they have no sense of decency and that when they lose at the ballot box their belief in democracy ends. This is about as un-American as it gets.

Epic fail. Just go ahead and tack on another 10 years of me not voting Republican.

Rep. Price embodies all of the traits characteristic of birthers and tea baggers: ignorance, obstructionism, disrespect, intolerance and incivility. In other words, he ably represents his constituency.

Over the years, I have listed myself as independent and even at times voted for republicans. However, I say this LOUD and proud: I am now a democrat. I can stand tall as a democrat. Tactics like these against women and everything that is decent have pushed me over the voting edge. I plan on voting democrat all the time.

Juxtapose the two clips of OUR democracy with a statement by President Obama's national security advisor, General James Jones, about the responsibility of Afghan leaders:

"It is time for the Afghan authorities to take care of their country. IF THEY WANT THE PROMISE OF A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY AND PEACE AND STABILITY, better opportunities for their children then this government and all of the governors have to do a much better job than they have done so far."

Yeah, well... If the Afghan authorities behave, they can become like us.

The six minute clips are a complete disgrace. Absolutely shameful. Imagine---stop to consider that we have soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan giving their lives, their blood, and in many instances their mental health to export this type of democracy.

Wow. Way to go, Republicans. You really show Americans what it means to be respectful of differing perspectives. Jeez.

Are there no procedures in the House for removal of disruptive members? If not, then there's nothing to stop bullies like these from running roughshod over the supposed "rules". They behave like they never left the schoolyard.

Mason's Manual of Legislative Procedure notes, "It is not, however, the presiding officer's duty to answer general questions concerning parliamentary law."[2] Per RONR, the chair is also not obligated to answer hypothetical questions. This motion is made by saying, "Mr. Chairman, I rise to a parliamentary inquiry."[3]
[edit]

Of course I didn't hear Price state his request like this.
04:04 PM on 11/09/2009
He was not asking a question, nor seeking a parliamentary ruling. He was objecting to a request for unanimous consent
05:42 PM on 11/09/2009
Except that he didn't let her finish, so there was no request to object to. He was out of order.
