What's Your Reaction?

Ricky Gervais is not a tolerant man--everything annoys him. He posits he'll end up like Howard Hughes, shutting the world out to avoid its germs. Gervais told David Letterman last night that he hates restaurants, whistling, and lateness--the latter because he can't believe people aren't rushing with excitement to see him.

I don't like the Office that much.

Too much "cringe" humour. It's perfectly executed, just not my thing.

But if you want to hear another side of Gervais, d/l his podcasts with Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington.

Hilarious stuff.

"Karl Pilkington has a head like a ****in orange!"

The original Office was great. The American version is just good, but it is built for longevity. If Gervais had extended the original themes and plots beyond a couple 6-episode seasons, there would have been a dramatic drop in quality. Gervais knew this, and called it quits pretty fast. However the American Office is much broader in its comedy and presentation, which has allowed it to stay relatively fresh over many 24 episode seasons.

I say "relatively", because there is one big difference. In the original, the fact that the show was a documentary, and all the characters knew they were being filmed for posterity was made an integral part of the dynamics of the show. Gervais character (and all the other characters for that matter) specifically said and did things with the documentary crew in mind, leading to many painfully hilarious moments. This added a whole extra layer of subtlety and nuance to everything the British Office characters did. The American version pretty much dropped this element as an active and essential part of the show after the first season or so. Steve Carell and John Krasinski occasionally "look" at the camera or play an embarrassing moment so as to minimize it, but it's just done half-heartedly now.

I agree with you. LOVE the original.

Another great show is Peep Show! check it out if you haven't. I realise a lot of the shows that I find funny, most Americans wouldn't even give the time of day...LOL.

I loved Extras. If you ever do watch it though turn on the captions. . . Gervais is brilliant.

OMG, Extras is soooo freakin' funny! What comes out of his mouth and timing are just brilliant.

Gervais was pretty funny in "Ghost Town" with Tea Leoni and Greg Kinnear. A feel-good romantic comedy, with Gervais as a cranky dentist with a soft heart. His new movie, "The Invention of Lying"..... I think he wrote and directed that one. KInd of a one trick pony. You might want to rent that one, rather than see it at the theater.

If I were Ricky I would be most annoyed by how much the American version of "The Office" SUCKS and how great the original British version was...and how few Americans have seen the original.

The original is way better, yes.

Better for sure but the American version isn't bad either and I enjoy it.. Gervais and Merchant are both billed as creators and producers in any case. . .

Maybe he's going to bring a British version of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" to Showtime?

Gervais is more used to people taking his ideas (like "The Office") ... I don't think he'd be likely to do a version of someone else's work.

Taking? He owns the American version.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:24 AM on 11/09/2009

That's not how it works. If something American is funny, other countries just show it. If something from another country is funny, we Americans make our own version and pretend like we invented it. It's called "creativity".

Funny is funny, whichever side of the Pond you reside. Gervais plus Letterman? Funny squared.

I can't stand the man with his dreary, rainy day English humor!

Apart from that he's ok!

He's obviously not annoyed by hair plugs.

Or having his unibrow waxed and manicures. Mikey Rourke could learn a thing or two from Gervais about hygiene.

Thanks for the reminder -- which we all could use from time to time -- that not everyone has a sense of humor.

Dave- So, let me half heartedly set up this lame topic we agreed upon earlier in the green room. By the way, if you knew what I've done in there you probably wouldn't use the furniture.

Ricky- Now its my turn to half heartedly attempt to provide a witty and supposedly spontanious ancedote to said lame topic since you won't let me talk about some of my preffered topics like cancer or necrophilia.

And folks don't touch that dial, next up we have Tim McGraw singing a song he released 5 years ago right after the break.

NO! Please don't tell me that talk show guests are pre-interviewed and that "bits" are agreed upon in advance. I'm shocked. Shocked! I guess the next thing you'll tell me is that some guests come on the show just to promote their latest movie-book-play-album-tv show, and that most don't make any effort to be entertaining at ALL! Wow. Alert the media.

you missed the point, we all know the topics are pre planned, I was commenting on their lack of enthusiasm in making it sound spontanious.
