Denver Post:

This is how an American soldier is made.

For 27 months, Ian Fisher, his parents and friends, and the U.S. Army allowed Denver Post reporters and a photographer to watch and chronicle his recruitment, induction, training, deployment, and, finally, his return from combat. A selection of photos from Ian's journey are posted below.

Basic training photos brought me back 26 years to Fort McClellan. Glad I don't need to go through that again. I wish Fisher the best and welcome to the family.

I don't need to see that, I lived it. And it is totally differ, without the camera man hanging around.

What's it like without the cameraman?

I'm guessing we won't see anyone talk about hajis in this "expose."

So how do you turn a young person into a murderer, and them let them loose into our neighborhoods when you no longer need them? How do they deprogram them? Or do they?

Wow its amazing how things have changed, yet stayed the same. I went through Basic and AIT at Benning as well, though it was nearly 20 years ago (when did I get so old?). Truth be told, it wasn't as tough as they make it out to be, but I suppose that's just my perception from being raised in an Army family.

Doesn't it all start with GI Joe, and the glorification of war, and tons of violent games, and cartoons! War is just a good thing for your stocks, and your corporation(s)!

Who are you, Tipper Gore?

Why don't you just outlaw all those "violent" video games and music while you're at it?

If we follow your logic, my generation should be the most violent ever seen on Earth, with all our Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes cartoons. We also had the Thundercats and the Superfriends.

Hmm. We're not fitting your stereotype, you hippy.

I hardly think Looney Tunes compares to playing video games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

You can't compare Tom and Jerry to SAW IV.

Let's be honest, we're in wars every 5-10 years now. Most countries aren't like that. We're breeding a nation of sociopaths.

Plages and Glockman both make good points.
