Allison Henry isn't the first to suffer from a horrifying medical condition that few women talk about. But her case was particularly bad, and she's just one of the few brave souls willing to come forward so that others will have the courage to seek help.

I was going to make a wisecrack before I read her story, but having read it I was aghast and mortified. I'm glad that she has managed to recover from a very terrifying ordeal.

Once, back when I was in the Service, I was on a patrol around our base, a rather large base, The empty land was rented by a cattle rancher who ran his herd on it. I happened to pass a field in which one single cow lay. Apparently it had had a prolapse and it's uterus was hanging out. I had no idea what to do but I remember calling it in to the command center and they hopefully called the rancher so that he could do something about it. That cow was in great distress and I couldn't help wondering how painful it could be. I was very sorry that I knew nothing about how to deal with it myself. If this is any indication of how painful and difficult it could be, I sure wouldn't envy any human female having a similar condition. At the time I had had no idea that something like this could actually happen. I always thought our insides were all attached to the inner part of our bodies. I can honestly say as a male I was clueless on this situation.

For the record, males can suffer from prolapse of the rectum during which the rectal tissue collapses through the anus. This can be caused by constipation. A growing trend in plastic surgery today has been anal and rectal reconstruction from rectal prolapse.

I put off reading this article because I knew by the title it would remind me of my hysterectomy and the "problems" I had after my surgery. Not as serious as this woman, but the affects still linger and since I was young and never pregnant/no children I was told my surgery would be a cake walk, huh, that was a lie! This story shows how arcane reproduction and women's medicine is.

Why wasn't there more discussion about avoiding physical activity which could lead to prolapse during pregnancy, such as yoga. Ive seen those ladies performing yoga on FITV. They are skinnier than the skinniest marathoner. They are far from pregnant. Why would a pregnant woman try to emulate this skeletal TV personas? If you're pregnant, dont do strenuous activities. That's what all OBGYN's say. Good God. Put off the yoga for 9 months while you're carrying your child inside you, PLEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSEEEEE.

You are so right.

There are other ways , besides strenuous exercise, to keep from gaining 60 lbs. during pregnancy.

It's called eating healthy.

Eat healthy, yes, gardengranny, but my sense is that gaining some weight in advance of childbirth is healthy, normal, and essential. A year and a half to two years of nursing and baby-care, in addition to living a normal life, requires extra fat deposits which are nature's way of ensuring a woman has the instant internal physical energy reserves to pull off such a feat of strength and endurance. It takes a hell of a lot of energy to make that much milk.

This was originally on a health forum, and HP puts it up on a news page where it is out of place and not necessary. A lot of stories posted on the side in the last few days have been inappropriate. Is there a reason something other than naked women and their genitals can't be discussed?

remarkable insensitivity.
i'm curious, has the internet exposed who we really are (passive-aggressive bomb throwers) or is it just Mr. Hyde having some fun?
the low-road is NOT the road less traveled.

Cripes. There's some serious insensitivity on here.

My mom had this for years. Never told anyone. It resulted in a hysterectomy. She was in a lot of pain, there was a lot of blood and emotionally she projected in different ways- anger for the wrong reasons, bitterness, depression. It kept her from doing some of the daily things she enjoyed, like long walks and gardening. Simple stuff became a challenge.

And the pressure it had on my parents marriage. My poor dad!
She always knew a hysterectomy was on the table but, electing to have a very important part of your gender and familial identity removed is heart wrenching. In her case, she had no choice and it was no longer elective surgery. It took her 3 years to talk to anyone but my dad about it. And that is a lot of pressure on him. A lot of support, mentally and physically, with no outside help.

It's not just embarrassing, it's loosing a part of yourself and having to cope with it. That, on top of menopause, hormone changes and a slowly but, surely "empty nest" at home with all of us growing up and out. She's well now and some of us kids (not me) have moved back home.. which I think improved the healing process tremendously.

On the lighter side:
Kinda makes me wonder about that Duggar woman?

This is actually not that uncommen. I had and I know severall woman that had this problem also.
My OBGYN told me hormon replacement therapy could have possibly prevented it.
