Ellen Portia

Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi visited Oprah Monday for their first interview as a married couple.

"This is the smartest, kindest, most wonderful woman that you'll ever, ever know," Ellen gushed as she introduced her wife.

Oprah asked Portia when she knew Ellen was the one.

"When I first laid eyes on her," Portia said. "But it took me three years to actually tell her how I felt about her, because I was on 'Ally McBeal' at the time and wasn't living as an openly gay person. I was closeted and very very afraid that if I talked about being gay it would be the end of my career. So I wasn't about to date the most famous lesbian in the world."

Ellen and Portia first planned to have a commitment ceremony, but gay marriage became legal in California in time for them to have a legally recognized wedding in August 2008--before Proposition 8 overturned the California Supreme Court's ruling for same-sex marriage.

"She's my wife, I get to say that she's my wife and that's just the way it is," said Portia.

"Anybody who's married knows there is a difference," said Ellen. "It feels like you're home. There's an anchor, there's a safety. I'm going to be with her until the day I die and I know that."

Love, LOVE, Ellen's new hairdo.

I'm for gay marriage and will be til the day I die, but as for Ellen's prediction, I dunno, I'm a bit skeptical.
Here's hoping they can beat the odds!

I would just like to note that MOST comments made to this thread have been positive, uplifting, and supportive. I think that's wonderful. Yes there are a few crazies along the way who want to spout nonsense but I see more good than bad. It makes me think that the voting on behalf of gay marriage is probably stronger than we realize bc the crazies go out of there way to affect voting negatively. I hope we can get past this ridiculous phase in our country's history and let everyone make choices that make them happy...regardless of sex.

Just a thought, do you think the objections are without merit? If so, why is that?

When objections are based on personal prejudices or 'hand me down through faith' prejudices, I think that they are meritless. I believe that we are all entitled to find fulfillment, happiness, and should be allowed to surround ourselves with people who support us. We have only one life to live. Who am I to determine that a gay person's love is inferior to mine for a heterosexual? Who is anyone to determine that their whole life is subject to societal whims and opinions instead of the pursuit of their own happiness? When God or the forces that be, calls me to him/her/it, at least I feel that I can say I did not think of my own happiness towards a word (marriage) as more important than an individual's life or happiness. I believe everyone has the right to be happy bc they have only one life to live. How can a society with a conscience deny happiness to another life? How can they deny without questioning it's bloated sense of worth?

Nice couple, wish them all the best.

Now, how do we get a handle on Oprah's
ego?
Could they make those pictures any bigger?

I think they are an amazing couple, however whenever I hear someone say something like this they end up breaking up a short time later. I hope this does not happen to them!!!

lesbians, unlike straight ppl don't really do this. They usually are more faithful when the other gets old as they are both women and less vain and into looks than men.

That's a stereotype...I know plenty of lesbians who are major commitmentphobes, and can't stay with someone forever...still, most lesbians DO have a better track record than guys, but I still know plenty of men who have been together for decades...

My standard response to this is:

Let's give gay folks the right to be as miserable as straight folks. These two ladies seem happy, so let them be happy.

Okay . . . I know that I am going to get bashed for saying this but, here goes anyway. Is there anyone on this blog willing to stand up and say “this is wrong”? But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.

Therefore Moses in the first of Genesis gives us an account of things from the beginning of the creation. Does it not clearly follow, that there was no creation previous to that which Moses describes? God made them male and female - Therefore Adam did not at first contain both sexes in himself: but God made Adam, when first created, male only; and Eve female only. And this man and woman he joined together, in a state of innocence, as husband and wife.

The word of God does not lie; nor does it change. Not for me, nor for them. Will the real Christians, please stand up and BOLDLY declare what is right!

I'm willing to stand up and say that it's NOT WRONG! I get so tired of the Bible Banging from people who are using a book that has been in its current form for a relatively SHORT time. There are so many reasons people use to make their HATE "o.k." It's not O.K. to hate or condemn people using writings that have been so changed/deleted/annotated/misinterpreted over the centuries that it boggles my mind. Hate Will NEVER be "O.K." and I think even Jesus would agree with me.

Just as I anticipated, I am being attacked for my belief. You all are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. However, let me correct you Singermuse. I never said anything about HATE. Nor am I condemning Ellen and Portia or gays and lesbians. I merely stated MY opinion.

Someone has to cry loud, even at the risk of backlash sometimes you have to stand up for your belief.

I believe same sex marriage is wrong and I stand by my earlier post.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:18 PM on 11/11/2009

In Matthew 19 Jesus addresses homosexual marriage very clearly.

Is this the same Bible that accepted (as in didn't condemn) two daughters laying with their father in the biblical sense? JUST SAYIN'.

Good point. So are Lot and his two daughters in Hell, do you think?

Exactly. Nicely put. It is almost a waste of time debating with a bible thumper because they often use the argument they are making to ultimately disprove their argument. The sad thing is they don't realize it or choose not to notice.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:25 AM on 11/11/2009

In that story the actions were simply recorded, as are many sinful acts in the bible.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:34 PM on 11/11/2009

Yes and let's not forget that when Lot refused to hand the angels over to the men of Sodom and Gomorrah, he offered them his virgin daughters instead, to do with as they wanted. Nice source for your personal morality.

One thing we do know is that the majority of the Christian community are Bible illiterates. It's a good thing that they just take what some leader/Charlatan tells them, because the Bible is truly terrifying, ridiculous, and well, simply insulting to intelligent, reasonable people. Jesus did lay out some ways people should act (Mosaic law). Here are just a few.

-Don't use your reason or your mind. Remain as a child with no moral sense, or ability to make rational decisions. ( I think you've got this one down).
-Love everybody. (You need to work on this one).
-Accumulate no wealth or possessions. There is no need for them. Besides you would run the risk of getting rich. (Since most fundamentalists believe in a free market - so need to work on this one too).
-Be a eunuch. (I don't want to pry).
-Behave as you please most of your life and say you're sorry at the end. (My favorite!).

Then, of course, the bible is used to justify racism, sexism and homophobia.
-Racists have used the bible to justify slavery because they claim Ham became the ancestory of the black race.
-Women are blamed for the introduction of sin into the world, although they have no knowledge of right or wrong and who, in no way was more at fault than the man.
-Sexual relations with women are unclean for men throughout the entire Bible so heterosexuality is actually wrong and evil.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:02 PM on 11/10/2009

You got one right. Everything else was not even close. Join the ranks of the illiterates.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:35 PM on 11/11/2009

Nope. The word of God according to whom? All lies, filtered through the hands of men with agendas. Believe what you wish, but don't expect the rest of the world to accept it as truth.

I say, bravo for Ellen and Portia. What an adorable couple.
