SAN ANTONIO — A U.S. Army hospital spokesman says the man suspected in a deadly shooting spree at Fort Hood, Texas, is conscious and able to talk.

Dewey Mitchell, a spokesman at Brooke Army Medical Center, says Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan remains in stable condition. Mitchell says Hasan has been awake and able to talk since he was taken off a ventilator Saturday.

Hasan is at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Hood.

Authorities say the 39-year-old Hasan opened fire at a processing center Thursday at Fort Hood, the country's largest military installation. Thirteen people were killed and 29 were wounded.

The rampage ended when civilian police shot Hasan.

Does anyone else feel absolutely nothing about this story? I am simply numb. I feel nothing. I feel completely helpless and defeated.

I think it is because this sort of thing has become so common...mass shootings...crazy gunmen who gave off plenty of warning signs that were ignored....innocent people killed without any rhyme or reason.......and nothing will change as a result...... Nothing except we will all become more paranoid, more fearful and under more security than ever.

I don't want to hear any more about this story or the victims or anything. I just simply don't care.

I have no more capacity to care. I have no more tears or outrage left.

As I commented in previous posts---they new him and what he was doing. Where does the fault lie?

The falut lies in America's too permissive political correctness. It needs to start calling a book by it's cover. A nut case is a nut case!

Maybe I missed something and though I am up to date now I am still wondering where 'the Shooter is dead' comes in.

Frankly makes me wonder about any information that is coming out of this sad mess right now.

He was a psychiatrist, so PTSD seems very unlikely. His rapid descent into extremism is unusual, it'll be interesting to hear how this plays out, what he says, etc.

What is terrorism? Using violence to further a political or economic agenda. Period. The mafia is terrorism. Muslim suicide bombers, the holocaust museum shooting, abortion-related arsen or murder are all terrorism.

By that definition, so is the army.

Yeah....if it's used for something other than self-defense, which means the last four wars this country has fought have been terrorism, not to mention all based on lies.

Vicarious Traumatization.
Side effect of listening to the horror stories of others for too long a time.
It is something that workers in that field deal with and sometimes forces them to move into a different part of their field.

Unfortunately in this case I can see it being used as an 'easy' excuse.
Of course if his name had been Billy Bob McCoy that reasoning may have been appropriate. Instead ....
There is more to this than we know and it is very worrisome. If he was in fact some sort of 'sleeper' how many more are there? And how many are actually known about and are simply being 'monitored'.

That defintion of "terrorism" is so broad it renders the word useless. If sombody kills a cheerleaders mom, then that should be terrorism as well.

BHOs' response to the death of late-term abortion Dr. George Tillers' death was "I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller."

BHOs' response to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasans' deadly rampage that left 13 brave Americans dead was to instruct Americans not to "jump to any conclusions."

With leadership like this I think it's safe to say the Dems will be unable to recover for the next generation or more.

This leader knows how reactions will be to the two events. The reaction to the Tiller murder would be met with outrage, but without wholesale condemnation of Christianity as a result of the nutjobs actions. The reaction on the right to this nutjobs' actions were predictable, wholesale condemnation of Islam by rightwing bloholes. And it appears you are there. Were you not shocked and outraged by both of these actions? And you are lying by omission here as well, a typical right wing trait, as those are not the only words issued by Obama on the subject of what happened at Fort Hood.

Oversimplify much? Take things out of context much?

Everyone here knows that the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES has said much much more about this situation than the single point in time that you have elaborated on.

Don't forget that Bush's initial reaction to 911 was to read a children's book out loud.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:49 PM on 11/10/2009

yes but his initial response was cool and detached. 2 mins before even making note of it. 9/11 was the atomic bomb that woke america up for about 2wks

What's amazing here is they knew this guy was trying to contact terrorists and they were still going to deploy him to the land of the terrorists, Afghanistan. I don't know but something seems terribly wrong with that to me.

This was a premeditated terrorist attack against our military. Unfortunately someone was asleep at the wheel allowing this to happen.

Yea, Got to believe that since this guy was at it as far back as 2001 that Bush/Cheney were waterboarding the wrong terrorists. Makes me wonder why those people that were waterboarded didn't tell them about this guy. Wasn't the reason for waterboarding and invasion of people's privacy to seek out terrorists like this guy? What happened, demrepub? Who was actually asleep at the wheel? America has always had terrorists and always will have them. Being awake at the wheel will never be enough especially when it's a guy like this that acts alone. No different from the Birmingham Church bombing in the 60's, Columbine, Oklahoma City, Virginia Tech, the Serial Killer in Ohio and I can go on and on. All of the terrorists in these acts were home grown Americans and many called themselves Christians. Let's not point fingers because when we you do there are some fingers pointing back at you.

What is it that would piss someone off this much? Is it possible we are doing something wrong?

People who do this often have lower thresholds than the rest of us. I'm sure he could name a bunch of things that "led" him to do this, but those are probably things other people endure or fight back against without killing innocent people.

Don't suicidal terrorists have lower thresholds than us? I'm sure Hasan was surprised when he waked up to find himself alive.

Actually, I reckon it's more "taking responsibility for past personal -- in this case "personal" meaning "national" -- actions."

I occasionally hear Republicans jabbering about that.

Is exploring the reasons why terrorists attack us too difficult for you? I can't see how blaming all Muslims is productive in any way except to piss them off.

How could he possibly slip through the cracks of our buttoned-up military, with it's checks and balances and chain of command? How could he have been promoted in April 2009? I believe there is far more to this story than we know right now.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:41 PM on 11/09/2009

Political correctness and "tolerance" are to blame. Everybody has a "right" to step out of bounds in America. In my opinion reasonable behavoir needs to be redefined in order to have a safe society. Look at Singapore and many other countries where nutty behavior is not as tolerated as in America, and are much safer to live in.

What I find disturbing is that this creature, having been a blip on the radar, was able to follow through on his demented mission. When you put in perspective the money and energy invested in Outing Gay folks who simply are no threat to the lives of the victims of this massacre . Maybe it is time to focus on the real monsters then to spend time shadow boxing the illusion of Gay folks being a real threat to service people.

This tragedy could and should have been prevented .

If I heard a psychiatrist was talking like an Islamic hardliner I'd take note but not rule out that he was trying to avoid overseas service.
