What's Your Reaction?
Nidal Hasan

Washington Post:

The Army psychiatrist believed to have killed 13 people at Fort Hood warned a roomful of senior Army physicians a year and a half ago that to avoid "adverse events," the military should allow Muslim soldiers to be released as conscientious objectors instead of fighting in wars against other Muslims.

So maybe Nidal did it to protest the military's CO policies. Ironically he may be right. Wouldn't it have been better if the Army had let him go instead of deploying him to kill Muslims?

Psychiatrists don't go into combat. They treat patients.

For all the religion bashing bandwaggoners, the biggest religions that cause people to kill each other
nowadays are:
1. Money
2. Postalism :)

Does anyone else feel absolutely nothing about this story? I am simply numb. I feel nothing. I feel completely helpless and defeated but otherwise...nothing.

I think it is because this sort of thing has become so common...mass shootings...crazy gunmen who gave off plenty of warning signs that were ignored....innocent people killed without any rhyme or reason.......and nothing will change as a result...... Nothing except we will all become more paranoid, more fearful and under more security than ever.

I don't want to hear any more about this story or the victims or anything. I just simply don't care.

I have no more capacity to care. I have no more tears or outrage left.

It's probably a natural thing for us to replace the hurt with a more insulated numbness. I think a lot of us are in flux somewhere between the two. There is just no rationality to explain events like what happened at Ft. Hood.

My heart, soul and prayers go out to all who have been affected by this tragedy.

However if Nidal’s speech to his colleagues were not a call for help and a bare faced warning then nothing else is.

Nidal made the presentation to fellow members of the medical profession who knew him to be Muslim.

If their response was indeed dissatisfaction with his veering away from the expected topic and not thoughtfulness on the one he actually presented – then, they totally missed the point.

Of course if he were treating Muslims and as it seems now, internalizing their anguish, then who better to advise on this?

As well, it is not unthinkable that he would hold opposing views on the impact of America’s two wars on his fellow Muslims. What is tragic is that he lacked the ability to directly reach out for help in managing this.

Of course one can argue that he had taken an oath and yes he did.

However history has shown us time and again, that the inherent frailties of being human does not always conform to what is logical or expected.

He will no doubt be criminally charged, prosecuted and condemned to die, thereby reinforcing the absolute human cruelties that drove him to do the unthinkable.

This raises a couple of questions: if you train humans to kill as a livelihood, be it in the name of Islam/religion or that of a country, why the surprise when they kill indiscriminately?

Apparently, making radical statements that should have raised a red flag, instead, were ignored and not part of consideration for his recent promotion.

"With or without it [religion] you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.
But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

In 2007, the other shooter from Virginia Tech, Seung-Hui Cho, killed 32 and wounded 13. No one piled on to question his ethnicity or blame his religion then.

If your in the US military and making countless statements in support of terrorism, you really shouldn't be in the US military.
