AmericaBlog:

We are launching today a donor boycott of the DNC.

It's really more of a "pause," than a boycott. Boycotts sounds so final, and angry. Whereas this campaign is temporary, and is only meant to help some friends - President Obama and the Democratic party - who have lost their way. We are hopeful that via this campaign, our friends will keep their promises.

Obama should have strapped on a pair and condoned the passing of Question 1 in Maine. I just signed a petition to repeal Prop 8 on a federal level:

good for you. He has though. Sorry. Maybe in the future he won't. But as to this day. Obama has done exactly ZERO as far as gay rights are concerned and is even back pedaling in the language that he is using. It's true whether you feel it or not.

My Reply to Gays Boycotting DNC:
Welcome to the Club, in joining, Catholics, Anti-abortionists, PeopleForHealthCare, People of Conscience, Real Christians/not Fundamentalists and everyone who hates the Conservatives, which Obama seems to be embracing.

Let us see why:
Patriot Act, and Military Commissions Act of 2006 are still in place. We have no Public Health care, the credit card companies are once again running amok, as are the banks, piling on fees, Blackwater still works as Xe for the USA, We are still murdering Afghans and Iraqi's, gasoline was at $1.44 December 2008, now is between $2.82-$3.03 a gallon, Obama still has not asked for a Windfall Profits Tax on the oil company scam of $2.4 trillion stolen from Americans between 2001-1009, no one has ever investigated the bank robbery of $282 million from an Iraqi bank by armed men in USA Mercenary Garb. Tom DeLaye has never been brought to trial despite being indicted, The war criminals have never been brought to justice, Obama refuses to Tax outsourcing Corporations, refuses to mandate Twice the present insulation in new Housing or offer credits for Geothermal no-energy HVAC…etc. etc. etc. I could go on all day, so welcome to the party gays!!!

Supporters of Medicare for all (single-payer) should try a boycott, too. It might make the Democrats sit up and take notice of us. Maybe we would at least get a stronger public option in the healthcare reform bill. It's not too late.

It's about time that gay people start to assert their monetary power, if nothing else. The Democrats have taken in our money by the fistful and made some nice promises, but when it was time to deliver, all we heard was that our problems had to wait until a) after the governors' races and b) after the economic crisis was solved. In other words, gay rights isn't important enough to be considered a priority. I hope this boycott is far-reaching and also is enacted on the local and state races, especially in New York and New Jersey should gay marriage fail to get the necessary Democartic votes to pass this time out.

The way you assert monetary power is to use it - not withhold it.

The only friends you have in Washington or in state government are Democrats. So - since you can't vanquish your enemies, time to beat up on your friends. Good idea.

But where you will make progress is with those things and people you CAN support, and whom you DO put your weight behind. Do you have a list of those?
06:46 PM on 11/13/2009
With friends like that...

In the end, it really doens't matter whether it is a Democrat or Republican in the White House.I voted for Obama but I now realize that he just tricked the gays in order to get their support. He has a personal disdain for us as is becoming cleraly evident through his words and actions. Although we would fare no better under the Republicans, at least they are honest with us. There is no hidden animosity or plan to win us over to gain votes. I guess what I am saying is that I have come to the sad conclusion that I would rather have an opponent who honestly opposes me than one who, like Obama, masks his true intentions to further his agenda. We gay people have had it hard for a long time and I think it is going to stay that way for a while. Unless Obama fulfills all of his gay supportive campaign promises I will vote against him next election. As a minority, he has an obligation to help other minorities. Instead, he and Michelle are living big in the White House.

The GLBT strategy of gay rights now or Republicans next fall doesn't seem very smart.
03:37 PM on 11/10/2009
That is not what this is about and you know it.

I support Democratic Candidates financially and with my votes. In return, I get a lot of lip service support in the election season and very little the rest of the time.

Why should I financially support a Party that constantly tells us to wait our turn?

Better, then, to assure victory by a party that says "Don't bother waiting. You don't get a turn."

More progress toward gay equality has already occurred under this administration than any previous that I can remember. And there is more to come.

You can do what you want, I guess. It's not going to stop this administration from trying to help you. Which is kind of ironic, really. If they were as venal as the backbiters here seem to think, then a boycott would merely get them to throw up their hands and walk away.
07:20 PM on 11/10/2009
Geoff, agreed.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is the very definition of goofy.

This is politics not the playground. When they betray us on this, their credibility on anything else is shot.

I'm nearly 60 and I've waited many many years. I've been patient. When Obama showed up and promised to be our "Fierce Advocate", we opened our pocketbooks. Within weeks of his inauguration his AJ releases a jeremiad insulting us in the most vile terms.

Well, this ATM is closed until the goods are delivered. Then I'll be happy to open my pocketbook again.

I'll call it Tough Love.
