If President Obama send 40,000 more troops, doesn't it become his war now?

Deployment will take 4 years...I repeat 4 years! That means the war will last 4 years pluuuus the time it takes for those troop increases to accomplish this mission whatever it may be, probably nation-building like Iraq.

So let's say that it takes a minimum of 4 more years to accomplish anything. That's 8 more years of war mi ni mum plus 35-50,000 stationed in Iraq indefinitely! According to different opinions this war might last another 10 years minimum! Together with the 8 years that already passed that's 18 YEARS!!! 18 years war and waste in Aghanistan...whyyyyyy????

This is the most disastrous, ridiculous decision ever made. It is politically driven to appease the right, and to attempt to salvage this term, and even if were driven to route out AQ (which it's not, since common knowledge dictates they moved on), neither motivations will accomplish what they seek.

....continued

Obama will sink his Presidency with this war and be limited to one term, since the right will h8 him even more and he is alienating so many who supported him and feel betrayed by many of his decisions. Militarily, it will continue to stretch these troops psychologically, and hundreds more more servicepeople will come home in flag-draped c0ffins.

But worst of all are the thousands of civilians who will suffer and lose their lives in this surge and escalation.

This a disgusting, deplorable decision destined to mire the country in more debt, further division and alienate so many who returned to the political process hopeful that he would lead us out of these wars and we could close the book on the disaster of the past 8 years. Instead he's just prolonging the misery and apathy for political gain with the right! What a useless endeavor!

He will go down in history for this terrible decision and just blew his 2nd term. What a waste of all our energy and funds getting him elected!

Who are you kiddding??? Did you listen to his speech today? He was laying out the groundwork perfectly! Some experts in the media read the same thing as I read. How naive do you think we are and how gullible are you?

Plenty of money for war, never enough for Main Street.

War is the USA's largest industry.

The USA spends more on war than the rest of the world combined.

The USA's governmnet is for sale to the highest bidder: A Plutocracy, not a democracy nor a Republic.

The USA is bringing Plutocracy to the world.

Obama to speak soon at the Fort Hood Memorial.

Obama said he wanted a new strategy. He has not announced (or leaked) any new strategy yet. I doubt he would decide troop numbers without an airing of the new strategy.

One thing is for certain. The more troops Obama sends, the sooner we run out of money and go bankrupt. If we are going to occupy Afghanistan for generations then we need less troops.

and how many more so-called "contractors" ??

funny that the mercenaries are never included in the number given to the media , even though they are at least the same amount or more as the soldiers sent...

Dear Mr. Obama,

I do not envy the decision on your plate. And I am glad you are being deliberative, because no matter which direction you choose, there will be more misery awaiting the poor Afghans and more haatred directed towards the US.

But I beg you, please, Mr. Obama, do not base your decisions on what America's few remaining conservatives think. They will undermine you no matter what, and it's pretty clear that they do not America's best interests at heart, only their own.

While I understand and sometimes applaud your desire to be inclusive in your decision making, let's not make this about being "bi-partisan" and instead about doing what best for America, Afghanistan and the rest of the world.

Sincerely,

A concerned citizen

Agreed - 100%.

I wish President Obama well, in making this "lose-lose-lose" decision.

Taliban is still going strong, innocent afghans are still suffering. Didn't we promise these people freedom and liberty? Everytime this country goes to war, it has never won that war. WW2 doesn't count as it involves the collaboration of several countries. With all the impressive equipments we have, we can't even get Osama bin Laden. Where we could have concentrate in just one war, we had to go and start another war for reasons still vague. Then we blame muslim countries for being angry at us. Most of them were fine with the invasion of Afghanistan anyway. Iraq was another story. Imagine the amount of lives and money that could have been saved.

British had taken their troops out from Iraq, Canada will be taking theirs out from Afghanistan by next year. Gordon Brown is under immense pressure about the british troops in afghanistan. If they decided to pull out whose going to be by our side?
