The Plum Line:

In a move that will intensify the coming war over how to treat abortion in the health care bill, more than three dozen House Dems have signed a letter to Nancy Pelosi firmly pledging to vote against the bill if it contains an anti-abortion amendment.

A source sends over a working copy of the letter without the signatories, and a source says it currently bears the signatures of 41 House Dems. They're all vowing to vote No on a bill if it contains the Stupak amendment -- enough to sink the bill:

This abortion thing is causing so much trouble that why don't the develop a list of procedures which are not covered such as elective abortion, boob augmentation, penal implants, hair reconstruction, etc.

so it's all or nothing? we narrowly got this through, I can't believe people are willing to throw it away for this. I have a brother counting on this bill to give him a chance to have insurance in case his cancer comes back. like I said, I understand it's about more than just elective abortion but it's just not as important as the people counting on reform for a chance at life.

What gives men wearing robes and wearing ugly hats and who live in a men's only club, the right and power to control legislation regarding what a woman can or cannot do with her body?

I don't the outrage here, I'm pro-choice but do not think tax payer money should pay for elective abortions either. I understand that this is about more about the blocking of private insurance for it but it is simply not worth it to not vote for the bill because of this. This is one compromise that must be made to get this bill through. There are people counting on this reform to happen.

No, this is one compromise that should stop this bill cold in it's tracks.

Here's an idea: Let's have the government control our health insurance and then we can have congressmen vote on the procedures they will cover.

Everyone good with that?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:31 AM on 11/10/2009

um. which plan do congressduds use? do they have to do exactly same as us?pay $15k in 2016?

Good - they should do this. The Stupak amendment is only and completely about denying women a legal reproductive right.

As Obama pointed out - this is NOT an abortion bill - it is a health care bill.

Stupak has dropped a poison pill into the bill. And he's a Democrat. Who needs Republicans?
The range of political debate is so narrow in America, that being anti-abortion is considered "centrist"?
People in other countries laugh when they hear Obama called a socialist by some Americans. A president who opposes gay marriage, supports Israel unconditionally, won't hear of single-payer health insurance, brings Wall Street gamblers into his administration, and escalates an occupation of a Muslim country, a socalist? Very funny.

Please write in something other than conservative code. This is not Glenn Beck, it's the Huffington Post.

think about it this way.....The rich man want the poor women to have the fetus so they can adopt the child when it is born. No more paying for a surrogate, or leaving the US to get a newborn....

I thought that abortion is an elective surgery. We should focus on procedures that are necessary. Abortions that must be performed in order to save the life of the mother is another situation however.

If you had a severely deformed fetus growing in your belly -- and no way to care for it as you are single, 19 and barely scraping by -- you'd sing a COMPLETELY different song.

Elective is in the eye of the beholder.

Elective?
126,000 elective procedures per day around the world....yeah, right.

Abortion is a need as old as human history.

I think we should be working on the technology to allow men to carry a fetus. Then we can just transplant the fetus to a man ( willing or not) and have him carry the child, then pay for the upbringing.

Why? Most people don't know what's good for them anyways. It's like the poll which says that the majority of people are 'happy' with their health coverage. It's bogus. Most people don't find themselves in a position where they have to take advantage of their health coverage. If they did, I think those numbers would drop.

To the 41 Democrats who have just took leave of their senses, Sit you fannies down with Nancy Pelosi and stop leaking this stuff to the press.

Remember that you are not Republicans and we will not have their behavior surface in the 41 of you without reminding you to stop sucking your thumbs and get this bill passed, it aint that deep.

this appears to be feigned outrage...

there is nothing in the amendment to limit women's reproductive rights...

if women want abortion insurance, they can pay for it themselves through a private plan...

(even if they are enrolled in the public plan)

Why would anyone buy abortion insurance?

Do people expect to accidentally get pregnant and have abortions on a regular basis?

Abortion insurance would be more expensive than just paying for an abortion.

yet some have the expectation that the public should share the cost of abortions while insurance companies profit from it...
