CHICAGO — The American Medical Association on Tuesday voted to oppose the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, and declared that gay marriage bans contribute to health disparities.

The nation's largest doctors' group stopped short of saying it would seek to overturn marriage bans, but its new stance angered conservative activists and provides a fresh boost to lobbying efforts by gay-rights advocates.

"It's highly significant that the AMA as one of this country's leading professional associations has taken a position on both of these issues," said Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, a Washington-based advocacy group.

The health disparities measure "in the long run, will certainly help efforts to win marriage equality," Carey said.

Whether the AMA's lobbying power will hasten efforts to overturn the "don't ask, don't tell" law remains to be seen. President Barack Obama has said he is working with congressional leaders to end the policy, and the AMA's stance will likely help, although gay rights issues have been upstaged by Obama's health care overhaul battle.

The AMA's vote took place at the group's interim policy-making meeting in Houston, a day after AMA delegates voted to affirm their support for health reform.

The health disparities policy is based on evidence showing that married couples are more likely to have health insurance, and that the uninsured have a high risk for "living sicker and dying younger," said Dr. Peter Carmel, an AMA board member.

Same-sex families lack other benefits afforded married couples, including tax breaks, spouse benefits under retirement plans and Social Security survivor benefits – all of which can put their health at risk, according to an AMA council report presented at the meeting.

But Jenny Tyree, a marriage analyst for Focus on the Family Action, a conservative advocacy group, called it a health insurance problem, not a marriage problem. "We all know there are problems with health care so let's solve the problem of the uninsured, rather than messing with marriage," she said.

Doctors who pushed the group to oppose "don't ask, don't tell" say the policy forcing gay service members to keep their sexual orientation secret has "a chilling effect" on open communication between gays and their doctors.

"A law which makes people lie to their physicians is a bad law," said Dr. David Fassler, a University of Vermont psychiatry professor who attended the meeting.

In other action Tuesday, the AMA moved closer to supporting medical marijuana, adopting a measure urging a federal review of marijuana's status as a controlled substance. That would make it easier to do research, which the AMA said could lead to development of marijuana-based medications that don't require smoking. The group said its position doesn't mean it supports legalizing marijuana.

chocolate city: "Look Obama won't touch this until after the 2010 midterms."

Forget about getting anything from Obama, in any year, other than glib speeches.

Meanwhile on average 2 service members are "fired" daily with the DADT policy intact. ..while they keep and encourage Neo-nazi and rednecks in the service (as long as they are straight)

Thanks AMA. We need all the help we can get to keep the momentum going. When I was in the military I served with straight people but I didn't mind. So why should they?

How can this country call itself the land of the free and take the rights away from a whole class of people?? We will not be truly free until every person can openly be who they really are!! Gay people are not truly free in America until they have the rights and liberties everyone else has!!!!!

No, it is the land of the free. It was invaded by the bigots.

Look Obama won't touch this until after the 2010 midterms. I'm sure he thinks that his 2012 coattails will give him enough cushion to push it through during the next congress.

Thank you AMA! This is the kind of support we need. When respected organizations like the AMA come out and speak up for gay rights, people will listen. I just hope that other similar organizations will grow some balls and speak up.

I am so tired of broken promises. Gays should be allowed to marry and to have the same rights as all Americans. There is NO, "And Justice For All" when it comes to being Gay in America.

This is such a no-brainer that I can't understand why it hasn't happened yet, and I honestly don't know what Obama is waiting for. This is probably one of the easiest, fastest things he could have taken care of in his first year as President. I served proudly in the Navy, and to say that someone's being gay destroys unit cohesion is a lie. Let's get this done, already!

I agree. I too served, in the Marine Corps though... I served with lesbians, but did not care. They did their job, I did mine. For some reason, I think its easier for women to deal with gays than it is for men....

I dont mind repealing DADT...

This damned "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy has destroyed so many lives!

It is obvious from the lack of discernable progress that our wars are being fought with equal ineptitude.

Remove the bigots from service. Obviously there are some high placed bigots and intolerants--with little morality, too, based on the wild antics and religous intolerance in evidence at our military bases.

It is unacceptable to destroy the careers of honest taxpaying Americans who want only to serve their country with honor.

There is an interesting syllogism between the longstanding, conservative-inspired "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, and the newest of conservative-inspired attempts to punish/regulate/control sexual behavior known as the Stupak Amendment, which could be analogized as "Don't Say, Don't Pay."

The rationale behind the Stupak Amendment, like the Hyde Amendment before it, is to provide opponents of legal abortion with a sort of backdoor opportunity to sabotage it. On no other issue do Americans get to "pick and choose" which legal rights they want to deny other Americans by citing their "tax dollars" as the excuse.

The Stupak Amendment seeks to effectively keep those "immoral" women in the shadows of society much like the dreaded homosexuals must be kept "in the shadows" of the military. It does this by effectively preventing women from entering into the mainstream health care system with their unwanted pregnancies -- the "Don't Say" portion of their slogan.

In return, the abortion opponents get to bask in the warm glow of their moral superiority with the "Don't Pay" provision, allowing themselves to enjoy the immense self-satisfaction of having denied their precious tax dollars to one they deem "unworthy" of public assistance.

The AMA's arguments above could easily read "bans on legal abortion coverage lead to health disparities for poor women and their children."

I hope you realize DADT was passed by a Democratic Congress and signed by a Democratic President.
