Thank you Senator Gillibrand for standing up for women. Please do not cave, it is absolutely vital that this amendment does not pass the senate. As a progressive democrat who has fought for healthcare reform and also a woman's right to choose - it is impossible that we find ourselves in this position. How dare the democrats pass this. If this amendment passes and If Obama actually signs it, I will leave the democratic party for good and I would never support Obama's reelection. The Democratic party has always stood for a woman's right to choose. If we cannot trust our own party, then who can we trust? This amendment is an assault on women's civil rights. Pregnancy is healthcare, abortion is legal and should be done through safe, accessible means. It is no different than if a very small group of white people decided to pass an amendment that would no longer allow public funds or insurance companies to cover african americans who had sickle cell anemia. Why? It is a civil rights issue and it is an issue that targets women. If any of these men truly cared about abortion or fetuses, they would introduce legislation that would not allow viagra or erectile dysfunction medicine to be covered. Or that would offer free contraception. This is agains women. Stand Strong.

Hey "faux pro-lifers"-

To be REALLY pro-life is to provide at least BASIC health care to all American citizens

Just a quick question. For those democrats that were going to vote against the bill because it would cover abortion and they are pro right to life... by voting against the health care bill because of this are they not denying my right to life because I'm uninsured and can't get health care? Is this hypocritical? What a joke...

It seems I may have to rethink my low opinion of Ms. Gillibrand.

Keep it up and I will vote for you over any of the potential challengers in the democratic party.

You go girl!!!

I like her a lot, and have since she came up. Murphy, however, seems to be looking a tad blue lately.

Abortion is a legal medical procedure and as such women should not be denied health care coverage. A physician may recommend an abortion if a woman is pregnant and then diagnosed with cancer, or becomes ill when pregnant and it’s discovered the fetus has been severely compromised. There are medical indications for an abortion, and careless contraception is rarely one of them. But whatever the reason, as with any other medical procedure, it is none of our business. And if coverage is not provided for all women, there will be resultant deaths.

Very smart political move. Out in front of hot button political issue and then lateral the ball to the Court.
Who say's she is not ready to play in the big league.

Senator Gillibrand just might retain her seat, at this rate. The Stupak amendment is an insult to women in this country.
