This is obviously a hate crime and should be prosecuted as such. If the Professor is NOT charged with a hate crime and dismissed from the school, then all claims to attain "equality" are bogus. Equality is not the motive here, superiority is. Where is the NOW, where are the reverands Jesse and Al? Their hypocrisy knows no bounds. If so called "white priveledge" exists I'd sure like to know where it is. 99% of whites in this country are born into modest to below modest means, same as blacks.

The professor was wrong to hit Ms. Davis.

Lionel McIntyre was not wrong about White Privilege or the pompous attitudes at Columbia.
However, by hitting Ms. Davis he lost his argument. He may have been frustrated but to hit a
woman is simply cowardly. When they were both vocalizing, they were on even ground.

The fact that Ms. Davis even had discourse with McIntyre about the very sensitive subject of race showed that she at least was not attempting to brush it under the rug. I am sure had he attempted to have the same conversation with white males he would have come up against the denial that Black, Asian and Hispanic professors come up against whenever there is a discourse with white males.
White males definitely have a sense of privilege, although what makes them feel this entitlement goes to the root of the greatest racist thinking that has made this country ill and its victims such as Mr. McIntyre who has obviously ingested so much anger he has become ill or at least unable to control himself.

This was a tragedy because it could have been very different. They might have been able to come to an understanding had Mr. McIntyre simply kept the discussion on an even keel. As it stands now, he only lost his temper, lost his argument and made himself seem the bully in the end. Something white males will falsely cease upon in their segregated clubrooms as a "told you so" moment.

Serves Davis right for being a white girl and not understanding the plight of "his people". Can I have some Obama bucks now? :-)

Flip this around and make it a white male professor and black female. Do you think for a second that this story would be buried in the HP news posts?

I think it's a good thing that we're finally having a courageous discussion on race in America, just like Atty Gen Holder suggested we have.

I'm sure this professor had a past bad experience with a white person and therefore resulted in the alledged actions. The fact that the victim was white, female, and got sucker punched should not matter. The professor is the real victm here....

Read somewhere that this was the result of a debate about "white privilege". Anytime you get physical, you lose any debate.

Drinking and "debating" don't mix.

People..lets not jump to conclusions..this will create a backlash against all black professors. ...the bigger tragedy here is the setback to the cause of diversity in academia and we cannot have that. Everyone knows that working continuously for 9 months out of 12 can lead to tremendous stress, delusion and irrational behavior: all signs of PTSD. He is as much a victim as the lady.

This is clearly a hate crime. Isn't there a federal law about this sort of thing?

Yes, but the law only works for certain groups.

These attacks on a great university, as is Columbia, speaks of how small are the minds of reactionaries. Professor McIntyre is a victim of this unfortunate event as much as is Ms. Davis. The real question is who was plying them both, for profit, with a variety of liquors, to ensare them in such an obvious setup? Columbia is a progressive seat of hope, of change, and all this smacks as another example of Rovian trickery.

Ok where's Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson? Surely they would come to the defense of a white woman.

Okay- maybe not.

A black man punching a white women in a public bar??? Is it a hate crime? of women? of whites? of achievement?

Will BO come to his side and weigh in and say , number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the NYPD, uh, acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own local bar drinking; and number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that, uh, there is a long history in this country of African Americans and Latinos, uh, being arrested by law enforcement disproportionately. That -- that's just a fact.

While he is at the mic, BO can give a shout out to some of his buds there at Columbia...

What does this have to do with the Gates, Crowley incident? If you can't address this incident, then just be quiet instead of proving your innate stupidity.
