Glenn Close encouraged people to speak out about mental illness on "NBC Nightly News" tonight. The segment was part of their "Making A Difference" series, focused on ordinary people doing extraordinary things. "Nightly News" has dedicated this week to highlighting exceptional ways that celebrities are giving back.

Close recently launched the nonprofit organization BringChange2Mind.org to create more candor and conversation around the mental illnesses that affect millions of Americans and their families.

The segment follows Close's work with Fountain House and how she was inspired by her sister's struggle with bipolar disorder to continue the mental illness conversation. The actress refers to her sister as her hero, with her ability to persevere despite five marriages, depression, mania and suicide attempts.

What I took away from that piece was:

"My sister is sometimes happy and sometimes sad AND she has been married five times, i.e. she is bipolar."
