In honor of Veterans Day, we're taking a look at some classic war films that best define the heroism, horrors, camaraderie, and honor you find in war. Some of the films make political statements, others zero in on the soldiers, and they all make sure we never forget the sacrifices made by our fighting men and women. Let us know in the comments about any of your favorites that we missed. Happy Veterans Day to all.

"Apocalypse Now"

Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War epic uses stunning sound and visuals to paint an unsettling portrait of both the war and man's inner darkness.

Seriously people, since this is historically Armistice Day the selections should all be focused on American wars. Braveheart? Puh-leeeze!!!

For what particular reason do you guys not have Platoon -- the greatest war movie, as well as one of the greatest movies overall -- listed? It even won the Academy Award for Best Picture....

How about "The Gladiator?" Not about an American War, but an excellent war movie.

Great list Kingbreaker. Check out 'Paths of Glory', which many people are complaining is not on the list. Academy award nominee that is one of the most powerful war movies I've seen.

Has anyone seen Katyn? Polish movie about, in part, the Katyn massacre, where thousands of Polish officers were murdered by the Russians during WWII? I haven't seen it, but it got very good reviews.

Hate to say it, but this was a lazy compilation effort. No Paths of Glory, Platoon, or Saving Private Ryan?? Lame.

Agree, Platoon was the best Vietnam movie from my point of view.

Yes azatrox, I agree, no Paths of Glory or Platoon. Also no Catch 22 (my fav) or one you never hear about, 84 Charlie MoPic, Vietnam Lurp team (Long Range Patrol) calling in air strikes deep in enemy territory. And then trying to get to chopper point for pickup. For me, as a Viet vet, this is a small movie but says it all.

Saving Private Ryan, door opening on the landing craft. 5 seconds is all it takes to no waht the film is about.

That was a powerful scene.

One of the most powerful scenes ever put on film, me thinks. They succeeded in capturing the surreal - which is amazing every time I watch it.

I have see a most of these films, and most of them don't make the list of my top 10 favorite war films of all time, although the very best war film will always be MASH.
But it goes in this order, if you're interested.

MASH
The King of Hearts
The Wind that Shakes the Barley
Inglorious Basterds
Pans Labyrinth
Father Goose
Apocalypse Now
Catch 22
Lawrence of Arabia
The Seven Samurai

What about Dr. Strangelove? Doesn't the cold war count?
