With the announcement Tuesday from members of the New York State Senate that they'll put same-sex marriage legislation to a vote before the end of the year, an exclusive NY1 survey of all 62 legislators suggests that supporters of the bill still face an uphill battle in their fight to get it passed.

Someone please explain to me why the term "marriage" when applied to homosexuals generates so much hysteria? Would the term "union" be more acceptable? After all, the point is for two people who care about one another to commit to one another "for better or for worse, until death do us part". Whether they choose a civil union or they choose to have their union blessed by a pastor/priest/rabbi (etc...) of their choice, or both, what is the problem? How does that threaten "traditional" marriage?

Seriously, I don't get it. What is the problem? Someone, please enlighten me.
