Kelsey Grammer

NEW YORK — TV network ABC's cancellation of the comedy "Hank" makes it two failures in three years for star Kelsey Grammer.

Grammer, the multiple Emmy winner as the star of "Frasier," also saw his Fox series "Back to You" given the boot in 2008. At least it made a full season: "Hank" didn't make two months. The Nielsen Co. said the show averaged 6.7 million viewers each week.

Its fate seemed sealed when ABC announced it was ordering a full season's worth of episodes for its three other new Wednesday night comedies. They include old colleague Heaton's sitcom "The Middle," ABC's biggest Wednesday hit, "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town."

ABC says Grammer's time slot will be filled by "Modern Family" reruns and holiday specials over the next several weeks.

Frasier had a magic that Mr. Grammer hasn't been able to duplicate. Perhaps he should try teaming up with his old side-kick from Frasier, David Hyde Pierce. Those two worked well together. Or, perhaps he needs to rehire the writers from Frasier.

Mr. Grammer is not good enough by himself to carry a show.

I love Kelsey Grammer, I think he is very talented. I still watch Fraiser and Cheers reruns and love him as Sideshow Bob. I also loved him in X-Men. I just think it will be nearly impossible for him to have another successful sitcom. He should just try to stick to movies and the theatre.

So is Kelsey really Bob Hope's illegitimate child? Thanks for the memories, Kelsey.

A couple failures. So what ?!

Grammer has MANY successes.

I was shocked (and disappointed) to find out he's a repub.

According to his past behaviors I think he'd be considered a libertarian-sybarite in his personal life, and in his public political statements a fact-free conservative. The producer of Frasier was killed on one of the planes on 9/11 on a flight that many in Hollywood take regularly so Grammer stepped up his "right wingedness" in the same way that Dennis Miller or Dennis Hopper did though he no doubt had a longer term standard issue conservatism that many Americans grow up with and either fall out with or not. In his case he endured a lot of family tragedy and spent the 70s and 80s getting to where he got in his career so who had time for activism .. and let's remember that Hollywood was where Ronald Reagan BECAME Ronald Reagan so why are we surprised that actors and singers whose work we enjoy can be all over the map politically.

As viewership declines on the old TV networks, they look to come up with ways to stay on the air that don't cost much to make, like reality shows, or Fox News.

On the Fraiser show, Grammar seemed to be channelling Jack Benny.

Revive Frasier. Seems that's the only character that fits him and I really enjoy watching the re-runs.

Throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks. I think he should try an hourlong drama if NBC ends up restoring 10 PM one of these years. Worked for Ed Asner.

He and Ted Danson should do a show together. Kelsey as a pompous medical professional and Ted as an old swinging single guy living in a singles complex while whining about not finding good looking women.

It would probably be a hit. Cookie cutter shows seem to work on network TV.

The first episode could be Grammer embroiled in a malpractice suit after a screwup in the OR leads to Kramer's demise.

Grammer's has two problems. Frasier Crane, and Side Show Bob. In the grand scheme of things those aren't bad problems. It's hard to leave big shoes like that at the door.

This is what happens when you essentially play the same character your entire career.

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:37 PM on 11/13/2009

Amen to that... in the age of Will Farrell and Jim Carrey or Jennifer Aniston who are all heading for that same brick wall of having one shtick and working it nearly to death. You've gotta keep mixing it up and trying new things ... take the risk. The sitcoms they keep handing to Grammer and Richardson are like parodies of themselves.

Somebody needs to help him pick a proper project. Nobody could have made this weak project work.

Agreed. These shows are getting picked up because of his star-power, even though the material is weak.

Read his bio not too long ago, and he is a mess. Might be time to hit the dinner theater circuit.

I was thinking, he's not too old to play Harold HIll in Sarasota, and think of all those Florida trophy widows. He will be wiping cream from his whiskers up until the next infarction.

Cheers and Frasier were canceled too. What a failure this guy is.

Hasn't ever television show ever aired eventually been canceled. Why is this news?

Cheers and Frasier ended because the stars wanted it to end. These latest shows of his drowned. Kelsey Grammer is type cast. He is Frasier Crane and will always be looked as Frasier Crane. That's just the way it is. He is making money from his production companies. He should just leave well enough alone.

He played a role that he was good at and everybody embraced.. that leads to typecasting but he can still do other things. He has to keep trying new things and hopefully something will work. And after that "American Carol" thing last year where he worked with the unfunny Zucker brother, maybe he needs to take some time and actually READ the scripts first before getting to deep into his next project. Actually his real life is a LOT juicier than any sitcom could possibly capture. Like every tv watcher.. I'm a studio executive in my own mind... if it were me... I'd do a knockoff of Barnaby Jones OR Get Smart featuring a breakout gay Arab translator character and Robert Conrad as a granny glasses wearing Rumsfeld Chief.

'Cheers' and 'Frasier' ended on a good note. They weren't canceled. And 'Back Too You' ended because of the writers strike, just like 'Pushing Daisies'.

I don't think you really know anything about 'Cheers' or 'Frasier'...so maybe you should avoid commenting on them.

Good, because they suck. He plays the same character over and over again. He'll probally blame the Liberal Media and studios on the cancellation.

It's almost as if the conservative's under siege in Hollywood/War on Turkeys and Christmas crowd in Hollywood can only be cancelled one at at time. This time Patricia Richardson's show got a full season commitment while Grammer gets quickly canned. I guess HE wasn't willing to get plastic surgery so that's that!
