What's Your Reaction?

Michael Jackson had 3D scans made of his body in what may have been a plan to build a virtual reality double of himself, the Daily Star reports.

The 3D scan data of the "King Of Pop" was taken in 1997, when the star was 37 years-old, and was put on sale for over $1 million by an anonymous seller.

According to the Daily Star, the seller noted,

The thing about this data is it immortalised him at the age of 37, before his nose was disfigured and when he was in the prime of life.

The Daily Star reports that the imaging could be uses for a 'reincarnation' of Jacko, such as a "robot twin":

Now scientists say following his death on June 25, the eerie images could be used to bring him back in music videos, computer games and even movies.

3D scan data of Michael Jackson was posted for sale on eBay, although this was not confirmed to be the same data referenced in the Daily Star article.

The seller auctioning the item -- titled "Michael Jackson 3D Scan Data From 1996" and selling for $1.5 million -- included pictures of the scans, as well as this description:

The original 3D scan data of Michael Jackson. This scan data was collected when he was 37 years old in 1996 and Michael was in the prime of his career. It also includes the color map from this scan in either CPV or UV maps.

This data was collected using the same equipment that creates the data used to create video games and or CGI avatars to make him speak, laugh, sing or dance. To make him dance just add a body double avatar. It can also be used for the most accurate collectable memorabilia which can be manipulated to any expression or pose.

The seller also noted that "the sale of this scan data is subject to the purchaser agreeing to clear the proper rights with the MJ Estate before it is publicly used in a promotional or commercial manner."

The eBay item included these pictures with the listing, as well as a link to a video that is reportedly an animation made from the scans:

The eBay posting linked to this YouTube video, noting,

A fan from mjjboard.com found this eaby auction [sic] and took image number one and made a very nice animation of MJ singing just using the 2D image.

WATCH:

This isn't Jacko's first brush with creating robotic twins of himself. The Register reported in 2007 that the pop icon was "considering the construction of a 50 foot robot replica of himself."

This is what happens everyday when addiction goes untreated - what a shame.

I'm hoping they discover a 3D scan of Rodney Dangerfield.

Now THAT would be news!

I believe the company that produces the image owns the rights to the image, as with photography. Using that image is another subject. That Jackson embarked on this project is most interesting to me. He (like him or not) believed in future possibilities - dreaming big.

What might our world be without the likes of Davinci, Capernicus, Edison, Jules Verne, Howard Hughes, astronauts (the list is endless), and all whose dreams created our present reality? It's mind-blowing that Jackson had the foresight to jump on a technology, which, at the time, was in it's infancy. This technology will continue to improve. In the future, we may attend a concert with a holographic Michael Jackson....think about it. He was rather bold and very clever.

Sadly, as a species, our evolution has been far slower than we care to admit. Only a few hundred years ago, we were burning people at the stake as heretics for their forward thinking. Not that much has really changed. We've only just come to understand that the earth isn't flat.

We have wonders of the world; self-erected monuments to ensure the legacy of historically important people. If you want to live forever, what better way than a 'replicant'? Creepy? No. Certainly, no creepier than cryogenics. Shrewd? Yes. MJ's critics can't dream beyond that of making jibes at those who do dare to dream, so, unless you have a groundbreaking idea, could you please zip it?

We really missed out on what could have been the greatest concert ever. Why not use that 3D image and do the entire concert as a movie with the 3D screen images he had designed. We have missed out on an unbelievable show. Read this article. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118011803.html?categoryID=3691&cs=1

He looked like a freak when he was alive, can't we just be happy with all the video we have of him and stop recreating what is not there.

DSOTM, You see what is freaky and creepy; however, it is gorgeous to us! I like MJ pre-changes and post changes. MJ was a beautiful protary which continue to grow, evolve, and change over time. It is creepy to You and individuals with a very limited small mind and close off space in your brain.

Many of us love MJ now and forever, he was innovative and creative - his actions and thought processes went beyond the limited mind-set of the average folks in this world which has a tendency to cause conflict and barriers to him/other free thinkers.

The 3D scan is worthless without the rights to use Jackson's name and likeness to make videos, performances or whatever. So the people who own these scans will still have to go through the Jackson family (or Trust) to actually put these scans to use.

I wonder what other creepy Jackson stuff we'll hear about soon...

I miss max, max, max, headroom. Would like to see it again because my memory is Max was amazingly prescient on the subject of "news" in the 21st century.
