Astra Zeneca Brennan

The CEO of one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the country said on Friday that he and others in the industry would switch their support for health care reform to opposition if Congress settles on legislation passed by the House of Representatives.

David Brennan, head of pharma giant AstraZeneca, told the Huffington Post that he was pleased with the White House and the Senate Finance Committee for standing by "the principles which we said are really important." The three parties entered into an agreement, before the health care debate heated up, that saw the pharmaceutical industry committing $80 billion to reform in exchange for various assurances -- the primary one being that the government would not use its purchasing power to negotiate cheaper prescription drug prices.

The House, however, hasn't played by those rules. And in an appearance at Bloomberg News's Washington Summitt, Brennan warned that the industry's ample resources could be turned against the broader reform effort if Speaker Nancy Pelosi's legislation were to emerge from the Congress.

"Right now the answer to that is yes," Brennan said, when asked if the support would change to opposition. "We said there were principles we didn't want to see violated. And if those principles -- price controls, Medicare rebates, moving dual eligibles back from Medicare and back into the Medicaid discount program -- if those things happen, I can't see how we could be supportive of the program."

Asked after the conference by the Huffington Post what kind of opposition he was discussing, Brennan refused to reveal his cards.

"We said we are not in favor of the House bill but we haven't seen what they are going to try to reconcile," he said. "We are going to do what we are going to do. Right now we are in support [of the process] because there are certain things we are trying to get into the system which we think make it a better outcome."

Part of that "better outcome" entails the potential for major profits for the pharmaceutical industry. According to an analysis put together by the pharmaceutical research firm, IMS, the industry stands to gain an estimated $137 billion from an improved economy, new market innovations, as well as the deal struck by with the White House and Senate Finance Committee.

And yet, when Brennan was asked whether Big Pharma stood to make profits going forward, he said no.

"Until we really see the elements of a health care bill come through... it is difficult to project," he said. "But right now it is not obvious to me that there is an upside to this."

Asked to reconcile his dour outlook with the IMS data, Brennan replied: "I talk to the IMS. They, I think, have gone from projecting the market would be flat to roughly two or three percent. I think you have to go back and look at their record of prospectively being able to project that out. And right now the market is softer than we probably expected it to be a few years ago."

Simple solution..revoke the "deal" with pharmaceutical companies and act instead on behalf of the public.

Translation: if any of the things that need to be changed change, we'll stop being as ethical as we've been to date...

Didn't Obama give $80B in concessions to these guys or they bought some $80B in concessions? Obama is a fool. First he capitulates, then compromises with these people, then they ALL back out of whatever deal they inked behind closed doors. This administration disgusts me. Business as usual. Change you can xerox.

Failed basic government class, huh? The white house is part of the executive branch. They don't make the laws. The legislative branch makes the laws. The legislative branch made no such deal.

And frankly, this deal was a joke. You can't have true price control in health care without addressing the ridiculous nature of pill-pricing. It amazes me that adding 5 cents worth of acetominophen (tylenol) to a drug suddenly makes that pill worth 10 times as much. Take the cheap pill and a tylenol!

Like any regular insurance company, the government should be able to negotiate drug prices.

Since supply and demand for pharmaceuticals is both a given and a predictable growth industry, how does a drug company that pretends to believe in the free market dare to hold its own government hostage? It's obscene.

We have got to get rid of theses Corporations:

They are robbing us, killing us and then asking us to trust them. I think not.

"The CEO of one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the country said on Friday that he and others in the industry would switch their support for health care reform to opposition if Congress settles on legislation passed by the House of Representatives."

Yeah, right! He actually meant to say: We will now bribe off the members of the Senate the same way we bribed the members of the House of Representatives. There is nothing in that bill these people did not know and approve, otherwise it would never have made out of the House.
America, you've been had. Enjoy your enslavement by Corporations.

Your comment makes no sense. Pharma is upset because of the House bill -- why would that lead you to conclude that they bribed members of the House?

Can we all say Oligarchy? I really wish I or we knew how to fight corporate government. We keep calling this a free country, I want to know how free are we, when we're at the mercy of the lobbyists, corporations and wall street. The progressives(I prefer LIBERALS) need to get it together and organize a protest of our own that will make the "teabagger" look like a potluck!

I love how Brennan comes right out and states openly that protecting their outrageous prices on drugs are "principles we didn't want to see violated" as if price controls or any other attempts to make drugs more affordable are unprincipled. The doublespeak is amazing.

"We said there were principles we didn't want to see violated. And if those principles -- price controls, Medicare rebates, moving dual eligibles back from Medicare and back into the Medicaid discount program -- if those things happen, I can't see how we could be supportive of the program."

A psychopath is exactly that: conscienceless. The most important thing to remember is that this lack of conscience is hidden from view behind a mask of normality that is often so convincing that even experts are deceived. As a result, psychopaths become the Snakes in Suits that control our world.

If anyone thought this health care reform battle was going to be easy you are in need of some of those pharmaceuticals the dryg industry has been pushing. There have been 4 presidents before President Obama fighting the same battle and they all lost. For some reason some people think this is a new issue that the Obama Adminstration came up with 9 months into his presidency. I wish we could get all the things we want in health care reform on the first try. But, I'm realistic, that's not going to happen. This health care reform debate has a lot of components to it the public option is only one of many.

I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to
tremble for the safety of my country; corporations have been enthroned, an era of
corruption in High Places will follow, and the Money Power of the Country will
endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the People, until
the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the Republic is destroyed."

PART 2 I am fighting to get the blue mutts out of office but I can't do it alone. But I know that no matter what, I will NEVER vote for a republican, even if the some of the dems are spineless at least most of them aren't deranged. I will not give the rethugs the chance to finish where bush mob left off at destroying this country. If the middle class and the poor can't get their heads out of their butts and put their hatred for people that don't look like them or don't believe what they believe on the back burner then their is NOTHING President Obama or anyone else can do to save what is left of our country. If our country is base on "I got mine, so f*** you", we will eventually become irrelevant on the world stage and the greatness of the US will just be a memory. We have a lot of ground to make up considering the last 8 years and we need to all pull together and block the rethugs from EVER getting back in power if we expect our country to survive. If we don't the only people that will suffer will be our children and grandchildren. Now how insane would it be to let that happen?
