The Who is just the name of the backup band for Pete Townshend. Non-believers should listen to the demos he made for the band on his Scoop albums, every note and beat is there, and played by Pete himself. The personalities may be missed, but Townshend is one of but a few musicians who can be called a real genius.
It is a pity the SuperBowl producers will try to distract us with silly dancers, pagentry and maudlin sentementalism. The last memorable SB performance was Prince, maybe these guys can do it again.
Not really.
He sent demos to the band members long before the Scoop album. In their field the WHO was probably the best live act. Townshend managed to hit the right note musically and in his lyrics for a whole generation. All this insecurity and violent aggression you have inside as a teenager he described perfectly. For us "old" WHO fans it was over when Moon died as he transported much of that unbelievable sound live. When I saw them in France end of seventies I had the feeling there is a band on stage playing Who songs without the original excitement.
I'll watch if I remember; I won't be watching football, so I may forget. Gettin' old, ya know. Memory's not what it used to be.
Could be better than some rappy stuff or those little Jonas Brothers.
Hope Pete wears his hearing aids. I'll be wearing my hearing protection. Gotta preserve what's left of the old eardrums.
Time for my nap now. Oops, almost forgot my Metamucil.
Goofy. Not in North America since 2008!!! Um, that was just last year.
Aside from that, Roger just played the Paramount in Denver a week or two ago. He did some Who songs. Probably stopped off in other cities as well.
I saw them a couple of times, the most memorable was during the "Live at Leeds" era. Was that 1970?
Half a Who at Half Time.
They were okay in, say, 1973.
Sounds very boring already and saw them live twice. Second time they were over the hill ... and that was in the late 70's. The two most unique members are long gone. The entire event sounds kind of pathetic sadly.
Embarrasing.
Yup, very well said.
My first ever concert was the WHO in Cologne in November 1966. I was 16 then and a fan from then on. After that I head the pleasure to see them in Europe many times. After Moon died it became a different story. Saw them in Frejus, France in 1979 and it was good but nothing compared to the old outfit. With Entwhistle gone it is probably even worse now.
They should call it quits and not make fools of themselves like so many other re-union bands with beer bellies and fat around the waist.
I'm actually pretty excited about this and never underestimate their ability to go over. They owned at the 9/11 concert at Madison Square Garden.
To all those sniping and p*ssing on.....What have you done or are doing? Tiny critics of the Who? The caravan moves on as the dogs bark in the village.
Hopefully Roger will rest his voice a few days before the concert. He's a looonnng way past his heyday.
Although they were a major influence in "My Generation", since Moon and the Ox passed I've "Had Enough" of the "Empty Glass". The new version isn't a good "Substitute" for what they once were. I "Won't Be Fooled Again".
And "Who Are You" to disagree?
Pretty funny!
The Who were (and still are, I guess, if you can call them "The Who" without Moon and Entwistle) a great band, but I can't imagine the agony of having written just two or three songs that people want to hear over and over again. I mean, do they play anything from "The Who Sell Out" in concert? That's a brilliant record from start to finish, but I'd imagine that the crowd would just hoot for 'Won't Get Fooled Again' or 'Baba O'Riley' or 'Who Are You?' if The Who tried to play 'Armenia City in the Sky'.
Oh, I can't stand "Who Are You?" Who who, who who.
Wow. I attended the first Who farewell tour in the early 1980s. I feel old.
