Pacquiao Vs. Cotto Fight: Manny Pacquiao Beats Miguel Cotto For 7th Title

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao's speed and power were way too much for Miguel Cotto's heart.

Pacquiao put on yet another dominating performance Saturday night, knocking down Cotto twice and turning his face into a bloody mess before finally stopping him at 55 seconds of the 12th round.

The Filipino star used his blazing speed and power from both hands to win his seventh title in seven weight classes and cement his stature as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Cotto took such a beating that his face was a river of red from the fury of Pacquiao's punches but he refused to quit even as his corner tried to throw in the towel after the 11th round.

The fight was billed as a 145-pound classic, and in the early rounds it didn't disappoint. The two went after each other with a vengeance and Cotto more than held his own as they traded punches in the center of the ring.

Pacquiao dropped Cotto with a right hand early in the third round, but he wasn't badly hurt and came back to finish the round strong. But after Pacquiao put Cotto on the canvas with a big left hand as Cotto was advancing forward late in the fourth round, the Puerto Rican was never the same again.

"Our plan was not to hurry but to take our time," Pacquiao said. "It was a hard fight tonight and I needed time to test his power."

Cotto fought gamely but in the later rounds he was just trying to survive as blood flowed down his face and Pacquiao kept coming after him relentlessly. It looked as if his corner was trying to stop the fight after the 11th round, but Cotto went back out to take even more punishment before a final flurry along the ropes prompted referee Kenny Bayless to call the fight to an end.

Cotto's face was swollen, blood was flowing from his nose and his cuts, and he simply couldn't stop Pacquiao from bouncing inside and throwing both hands at will.

"I didn't know from where the punches were coming," Cotto said. "Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers I ever fought."

Pacquiao, coming off of spectacular wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, added another one against Cotto, who had lost only once and held the WBO version of the welterweight title. Pacquiao did it in trademark fashion, throwing punches in flurries and from all angles until Cotto began to slow down and then pursuing him relentlessly until the fight finally ended.

The fight will likely set up an even bigger fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and many in the soldout crowd at the MGM Grand arena began chanting "We want Floyd! We want Floyd" after the fight ended.

"I want to see him fight Mayweather," trainer Freddie Roach said.

Mayweather may have second thoughts after Pacquiao did what no fighter has done before and win a belt in a seventh weight class. More impressive, though, is how he has fought, dismantling opponents despite moving up consistently from 106 pounds to the 144 he weighed for the fight.

The welterweight ranks will be the last ones Pacquiao conquers, though. He said he will not move up any more in weight.

"This is the last weight division for me," Pacquiao said. "It's history for me and more importantly a Filipino did it.

He was so dominant in the later rounds that Cotto was fighting backward most of the way, simply trying to survive. Pacquiao was credited with landing almost twice as many punches – 336-172 – as Cotto.

Pacquiao earned a minimum $13 million, while Cotto got $7 million

Pacquiao was favored, largely off his last two performances in which he forced De La Hoya to quit on his stool and then knocked out Hatton with a huge left hook in the second round. Some in boxing, including Roach, thought Cotto had been slowed by his devastating loss last year to Antonio Margarito and would be further slowed by having to come in 2 pounds lower than his normal weight.

I've seen Cotto just knock opponents out with punches Pac was just walking through.I am a fan of Pac and always have been but since his last 3 fights I"am disturbed about what seem to defy logic .Olympic stars Liu the 100 meter hurdler in China and Marion Jones comes to mind.I pray that I am wrong because of the millions in the Philippines who trully loves Pac.

Clearly, Cotto did all his best but still Manny is better than him

Again, Congratulations to the Pacman! He has beaten Miguel Cotto to win his record breaking 7th belt. so much for cotto's "bad-boy effect".

What you like with Manny Pacquiao is he don't appear (boastful or "macho-boy effect") well at least not for me and my folks here..

Again, Congratulations to the Pacman! He has beaten Miguel Cotto to win his record breaking 7th belt. You can see how Cotto chickened out during the 4-12th round of the fight - The referee see this through and decided to put a TKO on the head of Cotto... so much for his "bad-ass effect".

Pac-Man dominated Cotto. I have been watching 24/7 on HBO and looking at both camps I knew Pac-Man would win. Cotto hand picked and bunch of yes men, whereas, Pacquiao's corner was headed by the veteran and the man that made him, Freddie Roach. I want to see Mayweather vs Pac-Man, that would be a Pay Per View gold mine.

As a Filipino myself, I absolutely LOVE Manny Pacquiao but as a hardcore boxing fan, I love him even more. He fights with a passion, fights for the fans, and ducks no one. I also am a huge fan of Floyd Mayweather Jr. He may have shown a lot of "douchery" outside of the ring but you can't deny his skills in the ring. He could have easily been a fan favorite if he simply cleaned out the welterweight division but instead he fought for the money, hence the new "Money-May" moniker.

Manny can definitely beat Floyd but I can guarantee that it will be a BORING fight unless Floyd let's his hands go. I see the fight going the distance with Manny outpointing Floyd and winning in a close unanimous or majority decision. If Floyd lets his hands go and fights offensive, Manny better watch out.

I've only seen Floyd hurt twice before. By Zab Judah and Chop Chop Corley, both fast southpaws. But by the end, Floyd won both fights hands down.

Manny always shows up to fight so the outcome will depend on which Floyd shows up. Pretty Boy or Money? Pretty Boy vs Pac Man = Fight of the Year. Money vs Pac Man = Boring.

Manny's already one of the top 20 boxers of all time in my book but if he beats Floyd, OMFG he becomes unarguably a top 5 (even top 3) boxer of all time.

Dangit!
How 'bout a spoiler alert or something?
Maybe SOME people who don't have PPV, wanted to see the fight before knowing who won.

Pac Man took it to Cotto last night. The only logical fight left for Pacquiao is Floyd Mayweather. It's the only logical, big money fight for Mayweather as well. The only problem is who's going to get the larger split of the money, Pacquiao or Mayweather? The HBO 24/7 shows leading up to that fight will be hilarious and definite keepers on the DVR.

I agree. my money's on Mayweather though...FWIW

It's really entertaining to see everyone so convinced that PACman can beat Mayweather.
It will be such a letdown for all of you when they fight. You see, Mayweather beats all of the would-be best with something no one seems to highlight much. Hand speed? yeah, he's got lots. Strength? Sure. Mayweather has proven that. But he also has a skill that is consistently better than any fighter in his class....DEFENSE!

you sir, are without a clue...money-may most likely will not take a pacquiao fight (this has been his stance for some time now) because pacquiao is the only person in this sad sack of sh*t sport, boxing has unfortunately become today, that can pummel floyd...AND HE KNOWS IT. Mayweather is a product of the 2nd rate opponents that modern boxing has produced for him. Mayweather's career will mean absolutely NOTHING unless he fights and defeats Manny. And unfortunately that won't happen and no one will remember poor Mayweather except for the IRS and his illegitamate children.
03:24 AM on 11/16/2009
And people like you say the SAME THING before every Mayweather fight. Remember what was said about Hatton? And as far as the IRS and illegitimate children crap, you showed real class there. You don't know the man nor do you know his financial status. For all you know, Pacquiao could have illigitimate children and IRS problems.

Bottom line, everyone is always screaming about how Mayweather has never faced anyone like Pacquiao. BUT ANYONE WHO HSA GOTTEN OR WILL GET IN THE RING WITH MAYWEATHER HAS NEVER FACED AN OPPONENT AS SKILLED AS HE.

Pacquiao barely flinched at Cotto's punches. Pacman actually smiled and shook his head, great signature move, then pummeled Cotto. It was awesome!

I love what the commentator said just minutes before round 1 "Last year, Cotto fought against Margarito with loaded gloves. This time, he will fight a man with naturally loaded gloves".

No doubt. I know everyone's talking about Mayweather, but I'd love to see Pacquiao fight Marquez again.

Miguel Cotto lost to the Pacman simply because he was out boxed, out sprinted and outwitted from the start until it was stopped by the referee. Manny simply did his boxing brilliance, a clear demonstration of his superior skills in the sweet science of boxing. Cotto was undeniably a good prize fighter....but not good enough to dethrone the pacman's superior instincts motivated by his desire to make the 92million Filipinos proud.
