Zsa Zsa Gabor Has $118,321 Tax Bill, Blames Madoff

LOS ANGELES — Zsa Zsa Gabor's lawyer blames convicted swindler Bernard Madoff for a hefty tax bill owed by his client.

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, the Internal Revenue Service filed a lien of more than $118,000 for the years 2001 and 2002 against the 92-year-old actress on Oct. 5 in the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds.

Gabor lawyer Chris Fields estimates that Gabor lost about $7 million in Madoff's Ponzi scheme and the tax bill is part of the fallout. Fields says third-party money managers invested Gabor's money with Madoff.

Fields says Gabor and husband Frederic von Anhalt are pulling together their resources and working out a payment plan with the IRS.

I'd be very interested in hearing the logic of how Bernie Madoff caused Ms. Gabor's tax problem. Especially going back to 2001-2002.

If she was invested with Madoff, she was receiving taxable interest and/or dividends from those funds. Like any mutual fund, for example, these dividends and interest payments are taxable regardless of whether you receive them or reinvest them. In that time period, with respect to investments with Madoff, every thing was hunky-dory.

Perhaps Ms. Gabor was taking a lesson from the 'Queen of Mean' - Leona Helmsley - the super wealthy person who believed only the poor people pay taxes. The rich invest or park their money in Switzerland and evade taxes.

What you are ignoring ( certainly you have read this elsewhere , right ?) about the Madoff victims is that while they were being told they were making money - they weren't. Maintaining this charade was one of the reasons the two programmers for Madoff business were arrested this week as well.

The victims mostly were letting the money stay under Madoff control - with 10 to 25% gains ( again false ) where else were they going to get anywhere close to those rates.

Many if not most of Madoffs victims probably paid taxes on completely bogus profits.
However those taxes were not bogus and so what do those people do ?

It's hard to believe Zsa Zsa was a victim of Madoff...seems more likely to me she's a victim of a certain gold digger in her life. Let's see the records of her Madoff investments and the losses she incurred...This crazy phony gold digger in her life tries to jump on the publicity bandwagon everytime any news comes out, he trieds to use it for personal publicity. I can't believe more people aren't expressing more suspicion of him. The Madoff scheme would be also be a good excuse for someone to try to hide their squandering of someone else's money, now wouldn't it? Just saying.....Wonder what Zsa Zsa's daughter Francesca thinks of all this.....I know she has some choice words for a certain "Prince"...
