Reuters:

he World Food Programme, facing a major funding shortfall as donor governments are hit by the financial crisis, is appealing directly to one billion individuals to give small amounts of cash to beat hunger.

Josette Sheeran, head of the U.N. food aid body, said the aim of the Internet appeal, launched on Saturday, was to get people in wealthy nations to give just 1 euro ($1.50) a week, which would be enough to end hunger for another billion people in the developing world.

It's a noble cause but it's doomed to fail.

I can't believe someone didn't think through the publicity shot for this.

Why don't they use the money to address the CAUSES of world hunger: Oppressive governments and overpopulation. They're giving them a fish and not teaching them how to fish.

Wow Greggo, I, and about 3 or 4 billion people, would never had thought of that.

There's no need. Big government will take care of everyone, won't they? Won't they?

They should organize with churches, mosques and synagogues and major corporations. Even if not everyone gave one euro every week; but one billion people give one euro every other week; it would be something extraordinary.

This is so simple. I've often thought to myself why they didn't do something like this before. I hope it meets with resounding success.

It never hurts to be charitable, whether through your local food pantry or an international program like this. Some people need help, through no fault of their own, having been put into poverty by phenomena they have no control over: bad weather, natural disasters, repressive social orders, etc. If not just out of solidarity based on our common humanity, give at least thinking: "Well, if we don't stymie poverty there, that means wars will break out that our sons and daughters will be sent to, and starving abroad means there'll be less cheap sweatshop labor to make the stuff I buy at Walmart for my comfy suburban lifestyle."

once again the people are asked to "donate" food while world governments donate "weapons"

the local catholic church was asking for donations to build a homeless shelter.... i suggested the Vatican sell a couple pieces of art to end world homelessness all together.

Does anyone else msee the irony of the photo? We waste enough food in America to feed the world's poor. Our planet produces enough food to feed 3 billion more people than it populates.

True and what's really sad is that IN America millions of children are living below the poverty line. Shameful!

Al Gor's war on Global Worming amidst ever cooling Earth will undo any of such programs.

Poor countries will have incentives not to develop their agriculture and industrial countries will nave much less fertilizers, machinery and even food aid to offer them.

But Al Gor will pocket more money. Hurray!

If you're going to rail against a former vice president of the United States, you would do well to at least learn how to write his name correctly -- it's "Gore," not "Gor." And the issue he works on is global warming, not global "worming." And countries can "have" something, but not "nave" something. Spelling and grammar errors make readers wonder just how many fact errors you harbor as well.

I contribute to a couple food banks in this country and I would not mind contributing to this. But we need to start talking about overpopulation. A lot of these countries have had three to four hundred percent increases in the last 50 years or so. And the Catholic church is always hypocritcally castigating western countries for not enough help when it is their medevial birth control policies that exacerbate the problem. Years ago, a lot of people could make a subsistence living on their own plot of land. But what happens when the farmer dies and his plot is split up among his four sons, and so on? You get too big a population to make a living off the land and a lot of people end up in these third world mega slums. Just contributing money is not the solution.
